Lobbyist Bill Is Referred To Committee The California assembly early this week spiked a move to control lobbyist activities when the members voted 37 to 35 to send the highly controversial measure back to the committee. Orange county's legislators split on the vote with Speaker Sam Collins voting "aye" and assemblyman Earl Stanley voting no on the motion to re-refer the measure to committee. The action, it was claimed, is tantamount to killing the bill. The measure was proposed by assemblyman John L. E. Collier of Los Angeles and would have written into California law the same provisions regulating lobbyists now in effect in the federal congress. A move by the opponents of the proposal, headed by assemblyman Francis Dunn, Jr., of Hayward, brought bitter words from assemblyman Marvin Sherwin of Piedmont who favored the measure. Said Sherwin: "Let's not kid ourselves. Every lobbyist and newspaperman knows what's going on here. A vote on this motion to re-refer this bill is the way you will vote on the measure itself." Leavitt Ford Over W Aggies Top Knights 35-28 in City BB Lea Leavitt Ford and Aggies won the initial games in the semi-finals of the playoffs in the city basketball league race last evening, Wednesday, March 16, at the high school gym. Fords topped Williams 49-33 while Aggies throttled the Knights of Columbus 35-28. Earl Coombs paced the winning Studebakers with a 26 net for the evening to take night-scoring honors. McKnight connected for 11. The Studes were unable to pull away from the fighting Williams team until the second half. At half-time they held a 20-17 edge but in the third stanza went to a 39-24 lead and then went on to win 49-33. Berg paced the Agajanian team to their 35-28 win, scoring nine points. Aggies maintained a lead throughout the game with the K of C threatening only once and that in the second half when they closed into within four points. Halftime score was 22-14. This evening the same teams are again in action with both the losers playing with their backs against the wall. California Snow Fails to Stop 130,000 Tourists Despite adverse weather conditions and the cold of January and early February, more than 130,000 residents of other states entered California during the month, the bureau of plant quarantine announced today. Inspectors employed by the bureau, a division of the state department of agriculture, reported 82,735 automobiles, 11,863 commercial trucks, 2,812 states, and 266,022 passengers entered the state during the past month. The Blythe station, which serves the Orange county area, clocked 15,816 autos, 2,521 trucks, and 56,373 passengers during the 28-day period. Blythe, due to its more favorable southern route, reported the heaviest traffic, followed by Yermo, Fort Yuma and Truckee. Truckee, despite its snow-clogged U. S. 40, reported a heavy volume of traffic, more than one-third the automobiles coming from other states. All stations reported 83,278 passengers crossing the state line with residence in California, and 130,893 from other states. The 51,851 passengers on stages were new arrivals in this state, or Californians returning home. The bureau believes that with the arrival of the spring and summer months, California will experience its greatest travel in history and the quarantine stations are ready to handle a record business. Billion Bees Start Annual Northward Trek While thousands of residents of other states pass into California each month, more than one billion busy Californians are about to start the annual trek to northern states, Canada and even Alaska. The pilgrimage is an annual event and none of the pilgrims return. They are bees who make an involuntary migration in 10,000 to 15,000 lots, each accompanied by a queen. In the northern states and as far as the artic circle, beekeepers can’t keep their colonies alive during the severe winter months. Fresh bees are needed. So, the California bees, which get around and started earlier in the milder climate, are shipped north. Bees are used in pollination, as well as for their honey, and are necessary in the north. Consequently, the bee package industry has become an important one and bee experts of the University of California are cooperating with beekeepers so that high quality bees may be exported. More than 100,000 packages of bees will be shipped north this year, 5,000 bees weighing approximately one pound. The packages weigh from one to three pounds. noon meeting will have an opportunity to hear and talk with Red in the evening at 8 p.m. when he will be at the Elks club.
