Thousands Throng to Pasadena For '49 Southland Spring Flower Show
The 1949 southern California Spring Flower Show, one of the nation's major floral events, opened at noon today, Thursday, March 10, for a four-day run at the Fannie E. Morrison Horticultural Center in Pasadena's Brookside Park. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the show will open at 10 a.m. Closing time is 10:00 p.m. nightly.
The four huge buildings of the famed center and its five acres of surrounding grounds will house thousands of floral exhibits, varying from miniature flower arrangements requiring almost microscopic vision to expertly landscaped gardens occupying thousands of square feet.
English Type Gardens
English-type gardens will be featured in the main building of the Center, with gothic arches, clipped hedges and topiary works depicting a formal garden design. Hundreds of azaleas, bulb blooms of almost every variety, and rare and exotic orchids for which the spring classic is so famous, will be used profusely throughout the gardens.
Tulips will be air-expressed from Holland as will scores of rainbow-colored hyacinths and daffodils. England's contribution will be several hundred choice cymbidiums valued at thousands of dollars. A special section of the Center will be devoted to foreign exhibits only.
Camellias Highlight Show
Highlighting the show will be approximately 2100 square feet of camellias, one of the largest displays of its kind ever shown on the west coast. Colorful and unique arrangements of the popular blossom will utilize almost an entire building.
An innovation for visitors will be a garden consultation booth. Staffed by experts, the booth will furnish complete information on every flower in the show.
The management has announced that special days will be designated for the first three days of the show with blooms for each day given away in abundance to spectators.
All flowers currently in bloom will be on display, according to G. Wyman Hope, manager. "The sponsoring Pasadena Flower Show Association predicts that despite this year's unprecedented cold snap, one of the most abundant and effective floral displays ever..."
