Service Clubs
Hear Editor
Of AMA Journal
Practically all of Anaheim's service clubs and a great number of the county's medical fraternity united in a joint meeting Tuesday noon at the Elks' club to hear an address by Dr. Morris Fishbein editor of the American Medical Journal.
The affair was sponsored by the Anaheim Rotary club under the direction of it's president Joe R. Thompson who welcomed the 350 guests and turned the gavel over to Clyde Nickle, president of Kiwanis.
The first number on the program was a parody aimed at the guests and Dr. Fishbein composed and sung by the Rotary club.

quartet of Paul Demaree, Joe R. Thompson, Ed Jordt and John Wilcox. Nickle then introduced Dr. Eric Royston of Los Angeles, American Medical Association counsel, who introduced Dr. Fishbein.
The nationally known medical authority launched into an address on the great advances in health that have been enjoyed by the American people, who, he said, are today the freest from disease and have the longest life expectancy of any people in the world. This has largely been brought about by the advance in technique and discoveries of the medical profession. Other countries which have nationalized medicine now send their doctors to this country to find out the latest discoveries in the treatment of the sick.
He frankly admitted that medical service now costs more than it did years ago but pointed out how much more it was worth. The extra years that have been added to man's life expectancy are valuable ones. In 1900 a person could expect to live to be no more than 45 years old while today at 45 he can look forward to 25 more years of active life. This one fact more than makes up for any increase in the cost of medical care.
Then there is the control of epidemics such as the influenza plague in World War I when we lost a great many of those taken sick. Medical science has advanced since then, to such an extent that only a fraction of a per cent of the boys taken down with pneumonia and similar diseases were lost in World War II. These are things that cannot be valued in dollars and cents and they all came about under free American enterprise.
The creation of nationalized medicine, said Dr. Fishbein, would form such a bureaucracy in Wash.
GIRL SCOUT NEWS
Troop 23 Have Party
Troop 23, Benjamin Franklin school, had a Valentine party at their recent meeting. Games were played and refreshments were served from a table decorated with hearts.
Those on the committees were: refreshments—Gloria Taylor, Rosanna Fischle, Bette Van Delden; games—Glenda Smith, Lois Swint, Dorothy Thomas; decorating—Arline Sanchez, Pat Roberts, Diane Coons.
The meeting adjourned with the girls singing "Taps."
Troop 8 Visit Park
The regular meeting of troop 8 was called to order by the troop leader, Mrs. P. Schnitz. Roll call was taken with Evelyn Pelle noted as being absent. Dues for the year were collected.
The troop went through the park to look at various plants and flowers for the Garden Flower badge shown by Mrs. Dutzi. After the troop finished the trip through the park, they went through the plant of the Anaheim Bulletin. The most amusing part was to see the printing press work.
Find State Capitol Isn't on the Level
Surveyors from the State Department of Architecture made a discovery which some have long suspected—the State Capitol isn't on the level.
The surveyors, armed with transits, steel tapes and other equipment, were attempting to determine the exact elevation of the second floor when they found out...

The creation of nationalized medicine, said Dr. Fishbein, would form such a bureaucracy in Washington and in every state, county and city that almost everyone would be working for the government. The Truman administration is committed to the theory of nationalization of the professions as well as business but, he said, the people still had the power to make the final decision.

Plan Junior Ebell Benefit Dessert-Bridge, Fashion Show
Announcement of the annual Junior Ebell dessert bridge and fashion show benefit and a play review by Mrs. Arthur May of Santa Ana highlighted the club's general monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the Ebell club house, with Mrs. Ray Ortez, Jr., president, presiding at the business session.
This year's benefit bride party and fashion preview is scheduled for March 26, Saturday afternoon, in the club house. Latest wearing apparel will be modeled, courtesy of Cotler's, it was announced.
Attractive door prizes will be donated for the event by six Anaheim stores including Aaron Schultz Furniture Company, Hurst Jewelry Company, Mahaffey-Fitz Furniture Company, Victor G. Loly Jewelry store and Reinhardt's Appliance Company.
Reservations for the big annual benefit may be made by calling Mrs. W. K. Banks, Anaheim 5049.
Mrs. Ortez, Jr., introduced Mrs. May who discussed the current play, "Dream Girl," which is starring Lucille Ball. She stated that the moral of the play is that dreams should not rule one's life. The drama centers around a girl who in private, business and social life lets dreams be her master.
Mrs. May is a member of the Santa Ana Ebell club and of the Orange County Federation of Women's clubs.
A St. Patrick's day theme was manifested in attractive floral arrangements of red camellias on the buffet table and vari-colored stock on the mantle. Pouring during the concluding social period were Mrs. Paul Winsor, immediate past president, and Mrs. Leroy Burns, a guest.
After guests of Junior members were welcomed, activities for the month were announced.
New this year, the This and That Section will meet tomorrow (Friday) at the club house. A book review will be given by Mrs. H. D. Newkirk. Reservations may be made by calling Mrs. John Olive Mart Story Told in National Magazine Article
National recognition was given the "Olive Mart" owned by Mr. and Mrs. Lee D. Kiersey, on 101 Highway, south of Katella road, in an article appearing in the March issue of House and Garden magazine.
News of Lee Keirsey's "Olive Mart" and curing plant appeared in the "Shopping Around" column written by Helen H. Hamill.
It seems the magazine columnist was so impressed with a gift package of the vari-flavored jars of the Keirsey olives which she purchased in Los Angeles while on a visit with a coast friend, she decided to tell the public about her find.
Consequently she arranged an interview with the two Anaheim owners and gathered background material for her article which is illustrated with pictures of the attractive jars of the California olives.
In her column in each publication appears details of unique places with particular public appeal.
Keirsey exclaimed that this event "came out of a clear sky." He confided to a Gazette newsman that the news of his produce had already brought a very high offer of sale from an individual wishing to market the California olives on a national scale.

IMPORTANT to kite Flyers
"When you're out flying your kites, fly them the SAFE way!"
REDDY KILOWATT is right about that, boys and girls. The "expert" kite flyers know that it's more fun when you follow the four simple safety rules for kite flying. Here they are:
1. Fly your kite in an open field, away from electric power lines and other overhead obstructions.
2. NEVER use wire, tinsel or metallic string.
3. Be sure the string is perfectly dry.
4. If the kite catches in a power line, let go immediately. Don't pull! Phone the company owning the line and a lineman will get your kite for you.
