Part of Xmas Seal Funds to be Used For Heart Disease
The California Tuberculosis and Health association, an affiliate of the American Heart Association, announced its participation in the educational program of the American Heart Association's 1949 campaigned which will be conducted February 7-28. The national association is sponsoring a drive raise funds for research, education and community service in diseases of the heart, according to Dr. S. J. McClendon, chairman of the Heart Advisory committee of the California Tuberculosis and Health association.
No Official Fund-Raising
Thus, although the American Heart association's appeal for funds will reach many California through the various facets of campaign, no official fund-raising program will be carried forward in any part of the state. Instead, Dr. McClendon said, the California Tuberculosis and Health association will employ its facilities for the distribution of literature and information about the heart diseases. Part of this education program will be carried on during National Heart Week starting February 14th, St. Valentine's day.
Seal Funds Allocated
Dr. McClendon explained that in many areas of the state fund would be allocated to support the American Heart association's program. All these funds are contributed in California through the sale of Christmas Seals.
"We announced prior to the Christmas Seal Sale this year that part of these funds would be used for diseases of the heart, and that is being done," said Dr. McClendon. "The feasibility of joint action is illustrated by the fact that cases of heart disease are sometimes found through chest X-ray taken to disclose the presence tuberculosis."

Handlers of Fluorescent Lights Warned
Attention has been called in lit- erature and in a number of circu-lars received at the office of the Division of Industrial Safety concerning hazards connected with handling of broken fluorescent lights.
Most of these lights contain a certain amount of beryllium pow- der. If this powder comes in contact with any open wounds, it enters the tissues and begins to cause a tumor-like growth which usually requires surgery for removal. Many cases have been reported of such injury arising from the handling of burnt-out fluorescent lights, Talma Tanner, safety engineer of the division stated.
The glass in these tubes is frequently very fine and often flies with a great deal of force when the tube is broken. Care should be used in handling these tubes, and all burnt-out tubes should be disposed of in such a way that they are certain not to come into the hands of children.
A request was made of plant managers, business executives and owners to warn their employees and aid in the campaign of safety engineers now underway.
Receipt of Vets Checks Depends On Eligibility Form
Date of receipt of subsistence checks by veterans entering school this term under the G-I Bill (Public Law 346) will depend on proper completion of the certificate of eligibility, according to L. C. Chapman, manager of the Los Angeles Regional office of the Veterans Administration.
"The certificate must be completed in duplicate and handed in at the school." Chapman stated. "Veterans with dependents must claim them on proper forms available at the schools or nearest VA office" he went on.
Subsistence for veterans without dependents is $75 a month, for those with one dependent $105, and for those with two or more dependents $120. Earnings and subsistence combined must not exceed certain ceilings, however. For the veteran without dependents the combined figure must remain be-
by Los Angeles county in years past.
