California Last Week (Western News Service) The Governor signed some emergency bills; reiterated his desire to better conditions in the state's mental hospitals but said the state even with the building program contemplated is a long way from catching up with the anticipated number of occupants; characterized the publicity given an alleged "billion dollar" error in the budget by Assemblyman Jonathan Hollibaugh as "childish" (the error later turned out to be clerical) said once again that his budget contained no "frills or fancy work." The Legislature: Presumably members were home studying such bills as they have and "tapping the pulse of the public" on its attitude toward the 5,000 measures introduced during January; the state printing office hoped to be caught up by the middle of the month in printing some nine million individual copies of bills and other measures introduced; lobbyists and others were awaiting publication of the legislative digest, which is supposed to give an analysis of each measure introduced. The Departments: Employment said farm work throughout the state is dropping off, and warned that persons seeking such work shouldn't come here from other states: agriculture was still studying the effects of the January freeze to determine if possible the amount of damage done; milk marketing bureau will have an announcement soon as to whether hearings will be held to lower the retail prices of milk throughout the state; State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel said results of a survey showed California has Olympic Mts. Lecture at Forum Monday Life in the wilderness of the Olympic mountains is the subject of the illustrated lecture scheduled for the Anaheim Public Forum next Monday, February 14th. The film and lecture, entitled "A Biotic Community," will be presented by Herb and Lois Grisler. The free program, to be given in the Anaheim High school auditorium, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Color pictures of the little-known Olympic region, and its animal life, along with a sequence on fly-fishing, make up the lecture film, according to Ralph Focht, Forum director. Mr. and Mrs. Grisler have lived for several years in the mountain wilderness seven miles from the nearest neighbor and three miles from the nearest one-track road. Their home, winter and summer, is a moss-chinked log cabin. They spend their time fishing, raising vegetables and filming difficult and rare animal pictures. Monday's illustrated lecture presents the best of the film sequences shot near their wilderness home.
