Pupils Observe Soil Erosion in Air Lift Study In an aerial survey "Operations Conservation," 30 members of Orange county student bodies, county teachers and administrators viewed damage Monday of the recently burned over 46,000 acres in the county with an eye to future soil rehabilitation. Working through the state Department of Education and the county school system the observers were flown from the Orange county airport in six Stinson Voyager planes furnished by airport operators throughout the area who are cooperating with the state Department of Education in its flight indoctrination program. Students and teachers were briefed on conditions over the burned hills before being taken to the planes, by the use of maps and photographic charts prepared for the occasion. J. William Cunliffe, of the secondary school system of the county, was in charge of coordinating operations. In charge of the aviation division of the state department were John Brinegar and John M. Austin who piloted planes in the air-lift in addition to briefing the observers. Already once postponed due to unusual weather conditions, the flight was made despite low-hanging clouds. Representing Anaheim Union high school were superintendent Paul H. Demaree; Marlo Anderson, life science instructor, and Donna Thomas, student body first-hand observance, he continued. The student air lift was organized by the office of Linton T. Simmons, and attended by five persons from eight high schools and five elementary schools. Ways and means of preventing reoccurrence of such a catastrophic fire, will be studied by teachers and these pupils, who will be key figures in planning Arbor Day, Conservation Day and Luther Burbank's birthday observances, March 7. The following schools of aviation, who cooperated in the community service "Observation Conservation" program included Mr. Hill, Capistrano Airways; Mr. Owen, Cypress School of Aeronautics, Inc.; Mr. Price, Fullerton Air Service, Inc., Mr. Geier, Martin School of Aviation. An unusual feature of the trip was that the higher altitudes of the area were blanketed with a light fall of snow, making the denuded scorched earth appear whitewashed while the land still having brush and trees upon it appeared darker. It is important to note that miles have increased only a cent while poundage can quadruple. This is significant because it shows public is taking advantage facility. A planning meeting is expected to be called with the purpose of coordinating a county-wide Arbor Day tree planting program on March 7, in Irvine park, Orange county or McNeil park, Cunliffe said. Soil conservation and erosion has taken place with marked rapidity due to rains which followed the November forest fire, it was shown in the charts and in Users Association Incorporates A corporation known as the Western Water Users Association, embracing several western states, filed articles of incorporation with Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan. A non-profit corporation, the association indicated its purpose would be to expedite procurement and delivery of steel and other critical materials needed to fabricate and construct main water supply lines for cities, water districts and other public utilities. The articles cited the need for water in the west, stating as causes the rapid growth of population after the war, unprecedented growth of industry and agriculture, a slow down of water development during the war years, and a prolonged drought over ANAHEIM BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORY AUTOMOBILES GOOD USED CARS Wanted BAD CONE BROS. Clarence M. Belinn, president of the company, disclosed today that over 375,000 gross pounds of airmail was expedited in December. This means that over 15,000-200 pieces of airmail were advanced as much as 24 hours during the period. It is important to note that flight miles have increased only 100 per cent while poundage carried has quadrupled. This is highly significant because it shows how the public is taking advantage of the facility. "Much of the increase is credited to the development of night flying this year which we were unable to do during December 1947," Belinn said. "This means that close of day mailings now are dispatched by helicopter directly to waiting airliners at the Los Angeles Airport for delivery in the East the following morning." "To meet these ever growing loads, our company will soon redesign and modify our fleet of helicopters," he continued. "An additional compartment several feet long will be added to the fuselage, aft of the power plant, boosting the capacity from 750 pounds to well over 1,000 pounds a year ago, Los Angeles Airways had made in excess of 65,000 precision landings on 40 tiny heliports in the southern area, over 6,000 of which have been on the rooftop of the Los Angeles post office. During that period 2,783,188 gross pounds of airmail, totalling 97,-411,510 letters, has been expedited from 12 to 24 hours. Raymond D. Waite Killed Wednesday Raymond D. Charge Gas Company Earns Excessive Rate The California Manufacturers' Association charged in a formal complaint filed with the California public utilities commission that the Pacific Gas and Electric company is earning "an excessive and unreasonable" rate of return in its gas department. In the complaint the manufacturers declared that the P. G. and E. is operating in violation of the public utilities act. The manufacturers indicated that they will appear at a January 19 hearing of the commission to be held on the utility's recent request for a gas rate increase, to formally press their charges before the commission. Aside from the charge that the earnings of the utility's gas department are unreasonable, the manufacturers made three other specific charges: 1. Pacific Gas and Electric has been, and still is, diverting natural gas from public consumers to it's own use, abot 5¼ billion cubic feet having been withheld from the public and diverted to the company's own use in the 12 months ended July 31, 1948. 2. The rate at which P. G. and E.'s gas department sells its other departments is not the rate charged any of customers, it being necessary the company to offset thus lost by charging higher to the public. 3. The rates charged by P. G. and E. for natural gas have been increased to where they now merge rates charged residently. are dispatched by helicopter directly to waiting airliners at the Los Angeles Airport for delivery in the East the following morning." "An additional compartment several feet long will be added to the fuselage, aft of the power plant, boosting the capacity from 750 pounds to well over 1,000 pounds of mail."
