SOCIETY and CLUB ACTIVITIES
Applaud Lions Family Dinner
More than 60 youngsters cheered the arrival of Santa Claus at the Lions gala dinner and Christmas party held at the Elks club banquet room enjoyed by a total of 130 persons last Thursday night.
Warren Ashleigh, house manager of the Elks club, was master of ceremonies for the occasion. President Leavitt Ford greeted the Lions and their families.
Pantomime impersonations to recordings were staged by Bob Burns of Santa Ana. He presented Al Jolson's famed "Mammy" and a unique interpretation of Mortimer Snerd making music.
A galaxy of puppet acts by Donny Clark of Long Beach entertained members and guests.
As each youngster's name was read, he went on stage to be presented a Christmas gift, especially for him from old St. Nick who arrived in traditional garb carrying a well loaded pack.
Garrett-Nugent Engagement Told
Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Garrett of 218 North Olive street, Anaheim, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Margaret, to John (Bob) Nugent, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Nugent of Bakersfield, and grandson of the elry store.
Her bridegroom-to-be is associated with the Superior Oil Company at Bakersfield.
Wedding bells will ring for the young couple on February 4, according to present plans.
To be Exchange Program Guests
A resume of their evening as guest exchange speakers of the Huntington Beach Toastmasters' club next Tuesday evening will be given at the next local Toastmasters meeting, January 10, at 6:15 o'clock at La Palma Grill by delegates Marion Pickel and Dr. Ken Heuler, it was disclosed at Monday's dinner meeting at the Grill. President Herman Hoch presided.
Patterson trophy honors went to President Hoch for his discussion of "From Pulp to Print." Marion Pickel won the Optimist cup for his speech on "The Red Cross." James Auest told of "Five Months as a Farm Boy" and C. J. Stillson told of "San Clemente Fellowship" giving a resume of his experiences as an exchange speaker to the beach city with Ed Wright Monday of last week. At that time Stillson's topic was "Two Poles of Life" and Wright's subject, "Know Your Civil Wrights." The meeting was held in the San Clemente Episcopal church social hall with President Gardner presiding.
For the local meeting Wright and Alfred Holve were evaluators, Bob (Robert J.) Allen, grammarian and R. H. Allen, time keeper.

Assignments for the January 10, meeting will be mailed by Secretary Wright.
Linton Simmons Elected to Head School Association
Linton T. Simmons, school superintendent of Orange county, has been elected president of the California association of county superintendents of schools, it was announced.
The election followed a two-day meeting of supperintendents with the state department of education in Sacramento.
John W. Taylor, Mendicino county superintendent, was named secretary of the organization, and Miss Gladys Stone, Monterey county, treasurer.
Westminster School District Receives $51,904 from State
Two state warrants were enroute to the Westminster school district in Orange county, Thomas H. Kuchel, state controller, announced.
The warrants are for $25,263, and $26,641, Kuchel said. The funds will be used for expansion of the Westminster district's school facilities.
The moneys are part of the impoverished school district fund voted by the last legislature, and were allocated to Castro Valley on its showing that expansion was necessary.

GIRL SCOUT NEWS
ST. BONIFACE
Troop 8 of St. Boniface school completed their Christmas gifts for their fathers and mothers at their recent meeting. They also made plans to join the other Girl Scouts of the city tonight (Thursday) to sing Christmas carols.
ELECT OFFICERS
Troop 9 of St. Boniface school have as their officers for the next three months Cossette Pelzer, president; Katherine Hoben, vice-president; Kathleen Dugan, secretary; Sharon McKool, treasurer, and Donna Rose May, scribe. They met at the home of their leader, Mrs. Don May, and will complete work on the sewing and clothing badges after January 1. At this meeting they made Christmas door wreaths as gifts for their mothers.
PLAN SUPPER
Troop 17 of Horance Mann school was given a lovely Christmas party by Mrs. Paul Jungkeit at her home. After a short business meeting, during which the girls planned menus for the Father-Daughter supper, games were played. Prizes were won by Barbara Olsen and Arvilla Legg. BROADWAY SCOUTS
Troop 4 of Broadway school had a Christmas party at their meeting and after opening gifts they played games and discussed the Christmas pot-luck party. Refreshments were served by Mrs. J. A. Brown and Mrs. L. J. Homan consisting of chocolate milk and home-made cookies and these were furnished by Mrs. Ivan Storey, Mrs. F. H. Lee and Mrs. Homan.
Troop 4 was proud to have as honored guests at the pot-luck dinner at Fremont cafeteria Mr. and Mrs. M. Gauer, superintendent of schools, Mrs. Leroy Ater and Mrs. D. Smith of the Girl Scout Council and Mrs. Norman Tessner, Girl Scout secretary.
The following fathers and uncles attended: W. H. Mulvey and neice, Karen; L. H. Homan and daughter, Nancy; Ivan Storey and daughter, Mary Lou; F. H. Lee and daughter, Virginia; W. C. Kibat and daughter, Barbara Lee; Jess Long and neice, Charlene; Other scouts present were Angie Lopez, Erma Lopez, Geraldine Armendariz, Georgia Hile, Eileen Bruhns and Barbara Brown. Mrs. F. P. Decock was assisted by Mrs. L. J. Homan in the absence of Mrs. J. A. Brown assistant leader who was too ill to attend.
BROADWAY BROWNIES
Brownie Troop 50, Broadway school, finished Christmas presents at the regular meeting. Later in the week the troop had a Christmas party and gift exchange. Punch and decorated Christmas cookies were served by Mrs. Tex Ruis and Mrs. Clark Brown. The leaders enclosed a small gift in a Christmas card for each of the girls. Joan Sweet, who is still ill, was sent a get-well card.

Troop 6, third grade Brownies of St Boniface had a Christmas party by Mrs. Paul Jungkeit at her home. HAVE YULE PARTY
Troop 6, third grade Brownies of St. Boniface, had a Christmas party and also celebrated all of the troop's birthdays and their first year as Brownies. The table was decorated with small Christmas trees and in the center was a church and small chair figures on a snowy path entering it. For refreshments each Brownie received a cake with one colored candle on it, also cookies, candies and hot chocolate. Special guests were Miss Dorothy Bowe, Mrs. U. Pelzer and Mrs. J. E. Dugan. The leaders are Mrs. Ernest Landes and Mrs. Joseph Steward.
HONOR MOTHERS
Troop 48, second grade Brownies of St. Boniface, had a Christmas party and presented their mothers with gifts they had made themselves of pomander balls tied with red and silver ribbon and wrapped as presents. Christmas carols were sung as they stood around the table which was decorated with bright nappkins and candy canes. After ice cream was served several games were played to complete the party. Leader of the troop is Mrs. Joseph Ricker and Mrs. Robert Ryan and Mrs. Edgar Langer are assistants.
BETROTHAL TOLD
The engagement of Miss Virginia Mae Stack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Stack of 724 Minter street, Santa Ana, to John Hilary Sexton, son of Hilary Sextion of 716 East Fifth street, Santa Ana, was disclosed recently. The bride-elect is a graduate of Marywood high school, Anaheim. Her fiance is an alumnus of St. Anthony high school, Long Beach. No date has been set for the wedding.
