Science Dispels Old Fears, Myths
Heredity has long been the subject of superstitious fears and old wives' tales. But geneticists have discovered so much about the transmission of traits, diseases, and susceptibilities from one generation to the next that in many cases they can calculate mathematically the probability of their cropping up in your children or grandchildren, and they point out that a knowledge of the facts is the basis for a sane and sensible attitude toward heredity:
There are too many tragic instances of suicide and infanticide because of imagined inheritances. Too many couples remain childless because they are fearful of nonexistent 'taints.' And at present, a new crop of fears assails maimed war veterans who dread that their offspring may be born crippled or handicapped in some way.
Fortunately, geneticists are now constantly exploding many of the myths about heredity. Pioneering in this field is the Heredity Clinic of the University of Michigan, probably the only clinic of its kind in the United States and the inspired creation of Dr. Lee R. Dice, a gentle-mannered geneticist of 60, who directs the work of the clinic and of the Laboratory of Vertebrate Biology.
The clinic is open to anyone. Patients undergo elaborate clinical procedures. They are given complete physical examinations. The clinic also adds comprehensive studies of the other members of the patient's family. When all of the information has been col-
The clinic is open to anyone. Patients undergo elaborate clinical procedures. They are given complete physical examinations. The clinic also adds comprehensive studies of the other members of the patient's family. When all of the information has been collected, the staff of the clinic prepares a detailed genealogical chart or 'pedigree' of the patient, on which is traced the pattern of the trait under study. Thirteen hundred family case histories are now on file.
Further careful pursuit of the facts of heredity is being carried on in the Laboratory of Vertebrate Biology, where are housed 5000 pedigreed deer mice in tiny wire compartments. They reveal an extraordinary range of traits, which are bred into them, and recur generation after generation. The heredity of abnormalities, diseases, idiosyncracies — and desirable traits as well — in mammal man can be studied in mammal mouse.
As a result of the geneticists' research, we now know, for example, that tuberculosis, drunkenness, syphilis and drug addiction are not inherited. We know, for instance, that heredity is an important factor in diabetes, cross-eye, rheumatic heart disease, harelip, cleft palate and blood factor Rh.
When dealing with such more or less elementary traits as the color of eyes and hair, the geneticist can make forecasts with a considerable degree of accuracy. If for example, you have red hair and your husband also has red hair, you can count on the fact that all of your children will be red-headed. But if one of your red-headed children marries a person with black hair, then the geneticist will tell you none of their children will have red hair.
If both you and your husband have brown eyes, most of your children will also have brown eyes. But, since brown - eyed people carry in hidden form the gene for blue eyes, it is possible that one, or possibly more, of your offspring will be blue-eyed.
The geneticist is also equipped to advise you about the probabilities of parents' passing on to their children many ailments, such as certain forms of deafness, defective hair and nails, numerous

The geneticist is also equipped to advise you about the probabilities of parents' passing on to their children many ailments, such as certain forms of deafness, defective hair and nails, numerous types of skin defects and a number of dental malformations.
Parents who are given knowledge of a family-carried defect may sometimes prevent its having disastrous consequences in their children. If you are planning marriage and having children, it is an obligation to give some thought to the heredity factors present.
