Lemon Industry Opposes Any Tariff Drop The California lemon industry not only is opposed to any lowering of the tariff on lemons and lemon oil, but urges an increase, according to Clark Donmyer, director of sales promotion of Mutual Orange Distributors, on his return Monday from Washington, D.C. Donmyer and representatives of the California Fruit Growers Exchange appeared on December 7 before the Federal Tariff Commission and on December 8 before the Committee for Reciprocity Information in behalf of the California lemon growers. Not only did the representatives of California lemon industry oppose lowering of the tariff, but sought to have lemons and lemon oil removed from the negotiable list. The present tariff on fresh lemons is 2½ cents per pound. On lemon oil there is a 25 per cent ad valorem tax. The California delegation, according to Mr. Donmyer, has asked for a tariff increase of 50 per cent on lemons and lemon oil. Some importation of lemons and lemon oil from Italy has occurred during the past several months and an effort may be made by some interests to lower the tariff and permit more Italian lemons to enter the United States and compete with the American product.
