ANAHEIM 2068 CYPRESS NEWS The many friends of Miss Joan Taylor were greatly surprised to learn of her marriage on September 28 in Yuma, Arizona. Her husband is Walter Dalgleish who is employed by Shell Oil. They are making their home in Compton. Joan finished Cypress elementary school and attended Anaheim high school two years. She is the daughter of Mrs. O. M. Hupp, of Orange avenue. The regular monthly meeting of Centralia P.-T. A. was held Monday night with a panel discussion of "What Makes Our Schools Tick." Those taking part were teachers, bus driver, parents and a former Centralia school graduate. On Thursday, the P.-T. A. board held a meeting at the home of Mrs. Raymond Dillon on Harding street, to discuss the business and programs for the coming year. The group had a pot-luck dinner at noon. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Reed, popular owners of the Cypress Cleaners this week sold their business to Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Merriam and Mr. and Mrs. George Witcraft of Iowa. The two Reed boys will still run the delivery trucks. Mr. and Mrs. Reed live in Bellflower. Mrs. Madge Lyen and son, Lynn, were guests of Dr. and Mrs. P. F. Haskell of Artesia on Armistice Day. Mrs. Sarah Miller of Lincoln avenue, celebrated her 79th birthday last Sunday. Friends and relatives were invited to the Rainbow Angling club in Azusa Pot AT PENNEY'S ANAHE YOU CAN GIVE AND GIVE AN GIVE Christmas when you shop at Penney CITY WIDE CHRISTMAS OPENING THURSDAY, NOV. 18 STORES OPEN F 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 You save and save plentywhen you buy our wonderfu NYLONS Mr. and Mrs. George Witcraft of Iowa. Mrs. Sarah Miller of Lincoln avenue, celebrated her 79th birthday last Sunday. Friends and relatives were invited to the Rainbow Angling club in Azusa. Pot luck dishes were taken along and added to the trout caught and cooked on the spot. The Cypress Community club met in the cafeteria of the Cypress school on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Plans were laid for the annual Christmas party in December which tentatively will be held in the new fire station. The turkey is furnished by the club and the rest of the menu is in the form of pot luck furnished by the members. The club still sends volunteers to the County hospital to visit and take treats each month. The Cypress and Centralia school teachers attended the County Teachers' Institute held at Fullerton high school, Friday. Thursday, being Armistice Day, was also a school holiday. This gave the youngsters a fine long four-day vacation. It seems that the community has two very fine entertainment spots to look forward to in the near future, both located on Lincoln boulevard, at 6612 Lincoln, a permit has been taken out for the "Cine-Car" corporation for two rest rooms, a snack bar and projection screen for a motion picture show. Construction has already been started on this project. Across the highway from the Cypress school, a sign reads: "To be erected on this spot — a 1,000 seat ultra modern theatre with 6 acres of parking space." A special train for the junket to accommodate more than 100 persons has been arranged by Hillman with the cooperation of the Wells Fargo and Company Express, Mexico City. Several other persons will leave on the Hillman tour by airplane. Formerly Walter Schmid, Garden Grove rancher, president of the county-wide booster agency, announced George A. Raymer of Santa Ana, former secretary of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, to be chairman in charge of arrangements. Hillman also arranged for the California Avocado Society tour last April, with 136 persons aboard a special train. Up to then it was the largest contingent ever to go to Mexico City as one caravan. Present indications show the coming junket may top this. ILLINOIS COLLEGE SLATES MUSIC CONTEST Monmouth college, Monmouth, Illinois, announced this week the sixth annual Psalm-Tune competition held under the J. B. Herbert bequest with a prize of $100 offered for the best setting of a prescribed metrical version of Psalm 90 in four-part harmony for congregational singing. The contest is open to all composers and closes February 28, 1949. Text and information will be sent on request by Thomas H. Hamilton, Monmouth college, Monmouth, Illinois.
