Armstrong Says High Freight Rate Dividing Shippers Continued from Page 1 Despite higher costs of production, the largest navels in southern California, but the growth rate in October was larger. The rate in this district was .313 of an inch. Next largest was the Redlands-Highland district where the rate was .295 of an inch. Some County Citrus Growers Find cheered by the news that two of the 50 best producing orange groves in California (bases on a report by the Division of Soils and Plant Nutrition) which were formerly treated regularly, have not been treated for red scale for seven and eight years respectively, while treatment is applied to groves all around them. If biological control of citrus pests can ever be achieved, Orange county citrus growers are well aware that one of the longest forward steps ever made at the cultural end of citrus growing will have been made. Through years of low prices as well as in good years, treatment of groves by spraying, dusting or fumigation must be carried on at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. In connection with the search for natural enemies of citrus pests, entomologists who specialize in this branch of the science noted with interest that Harold Compere who has been searching for enemies of the red scale in Africa for the University of California Experiment Station came home the latter part of October. The Anaheim insectary of the Orange county agricultural commissioner, Dixon Tubbs, is working with several insects he gathered while in Africa, but it isn't yet known how they will perform in California. Meantime J. Linsley Gres- Armstrong Says High Freight Rate Dividing Shippers Despite higher costs of production, canned citrus is selling for less than other canned juices. Armstrong attributed this to the careless, unlimited program carried on largely in Florida and Texas. During the 1947-48 season, the equivalent of 160 thousand cars of oranges, lemons and grapefruit went into cans, Armstrong reported. Of this total, California and Arizona supplied only 5200 cars. Commenting on business conditions throughout the country, the Sunkist general manager reported that prospects were good for continued high buying power in 1949. Growth Rate Of Valencias a much better average growth rate than the northern end of the county. The growth rate in the southern end was .188 of an inch in diameter while in the north end the average growth rate was .178 of an inch, next to the smallest gain in southern California. San Diego county where the OAC found the largest fruit was next to the top in October growth rate with .222 of an inch. Ahead of all districts was San Fernando valley with a rate of .231 of an inch. The average October growth rate for all districts was .196 of an inch. The average for October, 1947, was .222 of an inch. The four-year average was .211 and the 21-year average was .205 of an inch. Six districts were ahead of that average this year. On the first of this month navel oranges in southern California averaged 330 to the box. The average in November, 1947, was 286. The OAC gives only the 11 year average for November. It is 257 fruits to the box. In no district in southern California did navel oranges average this large the first of this month. Just one district showed a better average than that of November 1, 1947. The average for the Whit- On the first of this month navel oranges in southern California averaged 330 to the box.
