Philip C. Rush, 20, son of Mrs. Amy Rhoades, 15391 Van Buren street, Midway City, this week joined a group of 14 Orange county young men in signing up for a three year enlistment in the U.S. Constabulary, the newest of the Army's organizations, whose mission in Germany is to secure American interests in occupied Germany. Rush formerly attended Garden Grove Union high school. He is now receiving basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. Yep, it's finally happened. Another great career opportunity has been offered by the Army to sort of augment and decorate the countless great deals already offered. Now, if you're an aspiring journalist, radio writer, television expert or community relations man—here's your chance! The Army wants to enlist one hundred men this year for training in those branches. And here's the best part! The hundred men who qualify will be assigned to a civilian newspaper, radio station or television station for training. They will act, work and dress as civilians for the complete training period, and will receive the top Army pay and advantages while doing it! The qualifications, in a nut shell, are: 18 to 25 years of age, high school graduate with the proper grades in the proper courses and the ability to pass standard tests for regular army enlistments. This, plus three letters of recommendation from persons other than your family, may give you the break you've been waiting for. Come into the Re WASHINGTON AS SEEN By Congressman JOHN PHILLIPS I understand there was an election last week! My crystal ball is applying for a job with Dr. Gallup or Mr. Roper or Mr. Crossley. This letter did say we were coming back to normal elections, with normal predictions and normal upsets, but neither I, nor 99 per cent of the people, expected what happened. The only predictor who turned out right was Truman. Many people will step forward to claim credit, or give reasons. No campaign is ever lost or won on any single reason. The losers usually say this or that defeated me, but overlook the other reasons which entered into the picture, and they give credit or blame to some reason which may only have been the final straw. The silent vote, undermined in any election, must have voted heavily for Mr. Truman. What influenced that? Perhaps it was a vote, with many, for the "underdog;" perhaps it was the fighting campaign which Mr. Truman put on, with little help, even from his own people, and with little money. People like a fighting candidate. Perhaps it was the influence of inflationary trends, and high prices, and the lack of houses, even if these are issues which must be solved at home and cannot be solved in Washington without the lives, have known anything except administration by this same party. We have what Washington and Jefferson foresaw. The tenure of one party becomes the control of the bench, and the agencies and departments, by appointment. This is not necessarily bad, but changed administration is the positive for centralized government, and mushrooming bureaucracy. California lost members on the Ways and Means and the Banking and Currency Committees. We lose the chairmanship of the Committee on Public Lands. I move up seven or eight places on the now-minority side of the Appropriations Committee; and I come the 5th in seniority on the California delegation and the one on the Republican side. California will have no major committees chairmanships, but our neighboring Congressman Shepard, will have his choice of being chairmen of the subcommittee on Navy appropriations, which he once held or of the subcommittee on Agriculture appropriations. Congressman Engle will be chairman of subcommittee on Mines and Mining. We can hope that Democrat members of the delegation will put on committees important to this state, from which we lost more than one of them will go thus putting Californians on both sides of that table. State to Devote More Study to Outfall Sewer The state board of health will call a meeting November 15 or early December when presented whether to rename the emergency operating permit of the Orange County Joint Oral Sewer system or to take over operation of the system itself. ians for the complete training period, and will receive the top Army pay and advantages while doing it! This, plus three letters of recommendation from persons other than your family, may give you the break you've been waiting for. Come into the Recruiting Station at 128 South Los Angeles and see if you can qualify. Don't hesitate—this is another limited offer. IZAAK WALTON RIFLE SHOOTERS MEET Members of the Izaak Walton chapter's rifle shooters met for a regular meeting and practice session last Friday evening at the Anaheim Union high school rifle range. Jim Wilson, president, presided. These weekly meetings are conducted at 7 o'clock in the evening. The value of clothing issued to new enlistees in the Navy during 1946 was $143.20 per man. People like a fighting candidate. Perhaps it was the influence of inflationary trends, and high prices, and the lack of houses, even if these are issues which must be solved at home and cannot be solved in Washington without the ultimate destruction of representative government. How many voters read history? People can't eat "unity." I trust they won't be too disappointed when lower prices and houses are not forthcoming, painlessly and without their own efforts and sacrifices. Labor may claim the victory, but the rights to that claim are still to be determined. This argument will appear again in votes on a bill to repeal the Taft-Hartley Act. Wallace may have taken fewer votes in critical places than the pollsters expected. The farmers voted for money from the federal treasury. The most important factor may have been the votes of millions of young voters who never, in all their political State to Devote More Study to Outfall Sewer The state board of health will call a meeting November 15 or early December 15 and will decide on the evidence then presented whether to remit the emergency operating permit of the Orange County Joint Oral Fall Sewer system or to take out operation of the system itself. The system's directors have asked permission of the state authorities to reduce clorination of sewer effluent during winter months. They argued that there is little or no use of the beaches; the vicinity of the sewer outlet during the winter and that a amount of chlorination prescribed by the state health department during summer months was exceeding costly. Ewald Lemcke, chief engineer of the outfall sewer system, said result of studies of chlorinated treatment and additional samples of sea water taken near the sea outlet would be available for meeting the middle of this month.
