Letter Writing Week to be Observed Over Nation Oct. 17-23. How often do you think about the letters you write—or should write—and what they mean to people? Every one in their life experiences remorse because of neglecting to write letters, answering those which mean so much to you and those dear to you, whether family or friends. No one gets so busy, it has been wisely said, that he can afford to let friendship fade away, especially when a little thoughtfulness—in the form of a letter now and then—would make everybody a lot happier. To make a New Year's resolution two and a half months ahead, start off National Letter-Writing Week, Oct. 17 to 23, by writing those letters now and then, as all resolutions should be kept, keep on writing letters. In past years, postmasters, postal employees and the public generally have shown enthusiastic and widespread interest in the observance of this meritorious event and this year will be no exception. There's genuine happiness in keeping track of folks through letters—hearing what they're doing, exchanging confidences and news and encouragement. They keep friendships alive, span the long miles and years; they're the mortar that holds families together, the links to home when people are scattered to the ends of the earth. When you write a letter, you're a little bit of the brotherhood of man; you're thinking of others—and doing something about it. That's the satisfaction you get from writing letters. National Letter-Writing Week has become an annual observance to bring to the minds of the public the joy of writing letters and receiving them. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE RADIOCAST Residents of this vicinity may hear a lecture on the subject "Proving the Truth of Christian Science in Human Affairs" which will be radiocast over Station KFWB (980 kc) on Sunday afternoon October 17, at 3 p.m. from Thirty-second Church of Christ, Scientist, Los Angeles. The lecturer, Ralph Castle, of San Francisco Demands Commy Spies Be Prosecuted Immediate and vigorous prosecution of alleged Communist spies uncovered by the House Committee on Un-American Activities was proposed Tuesday night by Congressman Richard M. Nixon, of Whittier, member of the probe body. Speaking to a 300-capacity crowd at a dinner meeting sponsored by the Republican Assembly at Santa Ana Masonic Temple, Nixon issued a stinging indictment of the "New Deal Administration" for its "mishandling" of Communists. He alleged that for three years the Administration knew of Communist infiltration but did not correct it, nor did it report to the people, seek to control it or oust the foreign agents. "TheThese people were not 'small fry' but had the best education and came from the best families; they held the best government jobs," Nixon declared. "Being a Communist before the war seemed no liability but a recommendation for a wartime job in the government." He recommended legislation to prevent "cold war treason" and called for new remedial laws to control espionage. But he said he believed that "Communist activities must be brought into the open; Communism is dangerous only when underground. The mask of patriotism and loyalty has been torn from American Communists who, testimony proves, are willing agents of a foreign power." Presiding at the meeting was Mrs. Lloyd Loveland of Newport Congressman Richard M. Nixon geles, vice chairman of the Women's Division of the Republican State Central Committee. DEMAREE AT STATE SUPERINTENDENT'S CONFAB Paul Demaree, Anaheim Union high school superintendent, attended the opening sessions of the state superintendent's conference at the Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, Wednesday of last week. Also present was Henry Walsworth, member of the local high school board of trustees. The conclave closed Saturday. Proposition 13 Would 'Orphan' 50 Counties Close to 50 California counties will become political "Orphan Annies" in event Proposition No. 13 passes in the California general election on November 2. This statement was made by M. B. Wellington, Santa Ana attorney and chairman of the Orange County Committee Against Proposition No. 13 who is among state leaders in the fight against what he terms, "one of the most vicious pieces of legislation ever submitted to the California voter." Continuing his figure of speech, Wellington said: "The cruel stepfather in this case would be a machine politician or labor boss in one of California's big cities. "If the measure should pass, complete control of state government will be in the hands of such men. Nearly 50 counties would be left with only a fraction of a senator. Domination of both senate and assembly by such men would be practically assured. "Actual figures tell the story, California's four big-city counties—Los Angeles, San Francisco, Alameda and San Diego—already elect 49 out of the 80 members in the assembly. Based on the 1940 census, these same counties would have a majority of 21 against 19 in the senate. After 1950—using new census figures for 1950—the senate majority would reach upward to from 23 to 25 of the senate's 40 members. "California's smaller cities, its towns and farming districts would be without a voice in state legislation."
