Toastmasters Complete Plans For Ladies Night
Kenneth Heuler has been appointed program committee chairman for the ladies night event of the Toastmaster’s club to be held next Monday evening, October 4, at LaPalma Grill on North Los Angeles street. At the regular meeting last Monday evening at 6:30, the group completed plans for this event and it was announced that members of the Anaheim Toastmistress club and their husbands would be guests of the Toastmasters.
The Toastmistress club will bring two speakers and the gram-marian for the evening and the Toastmasters will have two speakers and the general evaluator. Additional entertainment features have been planned and members are expecting a gala evening.
For the Monday evening session, the president, R. H. Allen presided at the meeting and introduced Robert H. Allen who presented the table topic, “Are Parkways a Necessity in Front of Our Homes.” Toastmaster was Royal Marten. Victor Huber was first speaker on the program discussing “The Spice of Business,” the talk winning the Optimist cup; “Switzerland, Oasis of Peace and Plenty” was the topic of the talk given by John Knutzen and the third speaker for the evening was Kenneth Heuler who used for his topic, “Why Have a Fire?” Mr. Heuler won the Patterson trophy for his discussion.
General evaluator for the evening was C. O. Garshwiler and J. C. Thompson was the grammarian.
Roquet Shoots
165-Pound Deer
Another proud hunter, Octave Roquet nabbed a three-point deer weighing some 165 pounds during an excursion with his wife and son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Art Roquet, 50 miles east of Mt. Lassen in northern California last week.
The two Anaheim couples left here by car and trailer returning Saturday with the big buck, the hide of which will be converted into trout flies by its owner.
According to Roquet he was just about to call it a trip and chalk up a goose egg for this season when he spotted the deer from their car. He shot it, conveniently near the road and automotive transportation.
Enroute the couples tried their luck trout fishing at Rock Creek, Silver Lake, Walker River and Lake Almonor. The epicurean delicacies were scarce, the anglers reported.
During the last lap of the 1600 mile trip, the sportsmen encountered some 100 miles of snow from Carson City to Mona Lake. Of historical interest was their visit to the famed old ghost town of Virginia City, Nevada.
State Buttons Up For Long Strike By Oil Workers
(Western News Service)
Voluntary conservation of gasoline and petroleum products in California "if need arises" is suggested by Robert P. O'Brien, State Oil Coordinator, in a letter sent to mayors of principal cities, city councils and boards of supervisors.
O'Brien, who is a supervising utilities engineer attached to the staff of the California Public Utilities Commission, asked the officials to designate a public or employee in each area to act in the event the shortage due to strike conditions and reduced deliveries becomes more stringent.

His letter generally presaged the probability of a gas rationing program in the interests of conservation.
