By State to
Vets Explained
Veterans must have entered the armed services on or before October 3, 1946, to qualify for state educational assistance, according to an opinion just issued by the attorney general of California, Ben Liebermann, Orange county director of veterans affairs, has announced.
With more and more veterans applying for aid under the state program as they exhaust their entitlement under the Federal GI Bill, the state department of Veterans Affairs had asked for official clarification of the laws governing eligibility of the late-1946 enlistees.
The attorney general's stand is that veterans must have served at least 90 days on active duty prior to the official "termination of hostilities," fixed by presidential proclamation as at December 31, 1946, to be entitled to state aid. Accordingly, those who entered service after October 3, 1946, would not meet this requirement, even though under Federal law they may be eligible for subsistence allotments provided in the GI Bill.
The state provides up to $40 a month living expenses plus tuition fees and the cost of books and supplies to California veterans attending colleges or universities, but not while they are receiving federal assistance.
The maximum expenditure for any one veteran is $1000.
Interested veterans may get information about state educational assistance at the Orange County Veterans Center, 225 N. Broadway, Santa Ana.
