Slot Machine Business Seems Good in State There will be no move on the part of Governor Errol Warren's commission on organized crime to investigate slot machine operations on local levels. This was the statement to the Western News Service by Warren Olney III., counsel for the commission, following published reports throughout the state listing county by county the extent to which the slot machine rackets has spread through northern California. "As far as we are concerned," Olney stated, "we are not moving anywhere. We are not a law enforcement agency and have no police powers." Olney said that the commission was thoroughly aware of the internal revenue lists of establishments which have paid the $100 tax on gambling devices in the state. "We intend to include these lists in our report to Governor Warren," he said. Asked whether or not he believed the number of slot machines have diminished in northern California since last year as internal revenue records would indicate, Olney said: "I don't think anyone familiar with the slot machine racket doubts there are many operators who fail to pay the tax." Lugar, USMCR, husband of Mrs. Ruth Lugar of 555 South Zeyn street, Anaheim, participated in the second annual mobilization of the organized, Marine Air Reserves at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro. Three ground control intercept squadrons and 12 fighter squadrons based at Naval air stations west of the Mississippi river were assembled for two weeks of intensified training. During this period simulated war maneuvers were carried out to test and develop rapid mobilization procedures in the Marine Air Reserve and prepare units for full combat stature.
