Now, Come Out Fighting! Like two boxers sharing a final handshake before starting to plaster each other, President Truman and New York's Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, opponents for the nation's top job, exchanged friendly greetings when they met during dedication ceremonies at New York International Airport. Looking on, left to right, are New York City Mayor William O'Dwyer; Col. Robert Landry, the President's airside, and Postmaster Albert Goldman of New York City. Walberg Tens Of Pressure On Agriculture How long Orange county can maintain its high place among the ranking agricultural counties of the United States will depend on the rate of incoming population and its tolerance of rural values to the community. An analysis of the impact of population on Orange county agriculture was presented by Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg to the assembled convention of Southern California Farm Bureaus last Saturday at Garden Grove. More people will bring in more industries that will require more water supplies, he said. Unless Metropolitan Water District supplies are increased in the county to meet the needs of urban and industrial expansion, the underground reservoir will eventually be inadequate for crop production, he pointed out. Protection of quality of irrigation water is another problem that must be recognized by the county. Industrial wastes, not only in this county but also in upper counties that may find their way into the Santa Ana River drainage, must be adequately controlled to prevent contamination of underground and surface sources of irrigation waters, said Wahlberg. The number of small subsistence farms is rapidly increasing in the county. This is reflected in the increasing number of requests in the Farm Advisor's office for information on home orchards, gardens and small livestock. A number of marginal citrus orchards have given way to suburban home acres. In other cases unprofitable trees are being removed and replaced with vegetable crops and irrigated pastures. Already incoming population, unmindful of farming requirements, are showing intolerance to orchard heating, orchard windbreaks, apiary locations, dairy barns and other essential farm equipment. The freeway will accelerate population influx and hasten the growing impact on agriculture. Los Angeles St. Relief Load of County Grows Direct payments for relief to the needy in Orange county for 1947-48 totalled $2,807,215, 46 per cent more than the $1,923,800 paid out in the county for relief during 1945-46, the first postwar year, California Taxpayers' association reported today. State Adjutant General Curtis D. O'Sullivan, attending the National Guard Encampment in San Luis Obispo, released a statement blasting the proposal. While Governor Warren, vacationing in Santa Monica, could not be reached, he is known to be a strong supporter of a state guard. O'Sullivan said that the guard has developed great strength and attracted the best officers and men in the country within two years after it was destroyed by the method of demobilization following World War II. "The National Guard," he declared, "gives the best prospect of strong combat forces, and apparently this successful reorganization has alarmed the anti-guard delique in the army." Further, he pointed out that if the policy proposed were pursued, the states still would be required to establish separate militia organizations for internal security. He stated he could not comment further until he saw the report of the committee.
