"HANK" SAYS... Another 1948 graduate of Anaheim Union high school, Gilbert P. Boutcher, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Boutcher, 9051 Harding avenue, Anaheim, enlisted this week in the United States Air Force. Boutcher was a tackle on last years football eleven and played guard on the basketball squad. He is applying for training to qualify as an aerial photographer and at present is receiving basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. "Seein' Is Believin'," the old timers used to say. And we're inclined to agree. It may be hard to believe that the United States Army will guarantee you the school of your choice before you enlist, but it's a fact! See for yourself. There are over eighty courses to choose from. And when you enlist for three years or more, you will be sent to the service school chosen by you before you entered the Army. Drop around here to my office at 128 S. Los Angeles street, here in Anaheim and see for yourself. Then you be the judge! The Chemical Corps of the Army is somewhat like a fire department in civil life. The Chemical Corps of the Army is somewhat like a fire department in civil life. The principal job of such a department is to put out fires. If necessary it may use fire to fight fire. So it is with the Chemical Corps—even more so than other branches of the Army. The mission of the Chemical Corps is to prepare our forces for toxic warfare (poison gas and other substances). The experience of World War II demonstrated it was the thoroughness of these preparations, more than any other factor, that prevented our enemies from employing this type of warfare. The Chemical Corps has made extensive research in methods of toxic warfare and has developed chemical agents, weapons, and protective equipment so as to bring the science of toxic warfare to a high degree of efficiency. During World War II the "fire department" was ready for action had our enemies seen fit to use gas. However, the Chemical Corps is not a standby branch of the Army, it has many essential functions both in war and in peace. American troops were first gassed by the Germans in February 1918. In June, four months later, American troops launched their first gas attack when the First Gas Regiment used mustard gas against German forces in France. When the war was ended in November 1918, the infant service was ordered demobilized, but a stay was granted before the organization was completely disbanded, and in 1920 revision of the national defense act made the Chemical Corps, then the Chemical Warfare Service, a permanent part of the Regular Army. Like most other technical branches of the Army, the Chemical Corps is devoting its greatest energies to research. Its purpose is to keep the United States abreast of new developments not only in chemical weapons, but in the use of chemistry in the pursuits of peace. Although it is one of the youngest branches of the Army, the Chemical Corps already has a tradition of outstanding service in two world wars. It has been ready to match or surpass any May Enroll in First Aid Class Enrollment still is open in two First Aid courses being sponsored by the Anaheim chapter of the American Red Cross, which got off to a flying start with their premier two-hour weekly sessions. Last Thursday night Hubert Ladig instructed the first 7 to 9 o'clock session of a 20-hour weekly course in the fire department headquarters in the city hall building. A second session began under the instruction of Mrs. Josephine Pulfer at her home, 560 South Clementine street, at the same time. Additional information may be obtained by calling the local Red Cross office, Anaheim 2065. BABY SON BORN A baby son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Patts, 120 Ellsworth street, Anaheim, Sunday at Santa Ana Community hospital. The newcomer tipped the scales at seven pounds, eleven and one-fourth ounces. It pays to advertise when you use the Anaheim Gazette.
