Propose Changes In County Land Use Ordinance Proposed amendments to the county land use ordinance will be considered at a public meeting to be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 16, at the Garden Grove high school. This is the first of at least two meetings which must be held on the matter. Dates for later meetings have not yet been set. The county planning commission says the proposed amendments will eliminate the present procedure of obtaining land use permits for establishing business, commercial and industrial enterprises in the present M-2 District which covers approximately 99 per cent of the unincorporated area of the county. It will incorporate maps in the county ordinance which will indicate where such businesses will be permitted. The commission estimates that approximately 60 per cent of business enterprises will, under the proposed amendments, locate in districts permitting their establishment. Many other existing land use protective measures, the commission says, will be simplified by the proposed changes. Hundreds of new compounds are being tested to find out their exact effect on citrus. Thinning the new crop was found to be of some small help but the results obtained this way were not at all satisfactory. The groves that did raise good sized fruit were all found to be in an unusually healthful and vigorous condition with heavy dark green foliage and quite free from insect or insecticide damage. This type of grove, in the various sections, is now being studied to ascertain all the factors that enter into this condition of good health. There have been calls for help in filling Since the spring of 1929 when the problem of small sized oranges was first brought forcibly to their attention the Citrus Experiment Station has had a corps of research men looking for a solution of this complex problem and next spring, after twenty years study, may have a powerful drug, 2-4D, that they can recommend in proper dosage for commercial use to help the grower combat this scourge was the meat of a report by Dr. L. D. Batchelor of the station to the board of the California Fruit Growers Exchange meeting in Los Angeles on Wednesday. This was the first comprehensive statement by the experiment station and grew out of a demand from the directors of the exchange which deflected the growing anxiety of growers to know what they could expect from the state supported institution in the way of relief from the flood of small sizes they were growing. Dr. Batchelor stated that experiments so far had indicated that the tricky plant regulator, 2-4D, could be used to increase the size of citrus fruit. A preliminary report would be ready early next year, he stated, that would permit growers to use the regulator to increase their sizes without reducing volume or quality and with no damage to the tree. He further said that the main task that remained was to determine the dosage that could be used to attain this result. The factors that go to make up the production of small fruit are many and varied. Number of leaves to the tree, methods of pest control and need for more frequent spraying have a definite relation to sizes grown. In this regard the experiment station has been found to be at all satisfactory. The groves that did raise good sized fruit were all found to be in an unusually healthful and vigorous condition with heavy dark green foliage and quite free from insect or insecticide damage. This type of grove, in the various sections, is now being studied to ascertain all the factors that enter into this condition of good health. Growers and marketing officials left the meeting with the feeling that after twenty years of prodiding the state supported institution was at last cognizant of the pressure from the grower himself to actively work and report on the problem. Although Dr. Batchelor's statement was largely a resume of the problems encountered the listeners felt that they might be shown in months to come how to eliminate some of them and gain a little relief from the plague of small sizes. As one grower summed it up: "If we do get a year of fair sizes let us not forget to demand continued research and study on this problem." In pre-flight estimates of the time required for the flight from San Francisco to Honolulu, an overwater distance of 2,420 miles, Naval Air Transport Service navigators have achieved an average of only six minutes error.
