The appointment and ordering active duty of 1st Lieutenant in P. Nelson, formerly S/Sgt. in R. Nelson of the Santa Ana recruiting Office, who was better known around the county seat as nearest John, the people's friend," he received 24 July, 1948. "Devils From the Sky." That's the way the Germans referred to the men of the Airborne. And they had good reason, too. For the Airborne is everything that is swift, sudden and tough. For the man who is looking for a branch of service that combines everything in the regular army and is the essence of this modern and highly technical age of flight; then he wants an enlistment in the Airborne.
Not many years ago Airborne armies were only a dream. Now after the battles of the Pacific and Europe, Airborne is here to stay. And it will play an ever-increasing part in the nation's military establishment. No service calls for more; no service offers more. Here is the thrill of the jump, the swift silent descent of the glider, the sudden avalanche of the troop transport. And here is a specialized and highly technical training. If you want to shape an army enlistment into a future career, either as a soldier or as a civilian you'll find no better training or practical experience than the Airborne has to offer.
Airborne means everything found on the ground suddenly transposed into the air. Airborne Engineers and Infantry, Medical men and Artillery, everything adapted, trained and improved for aerial operation.
The Airborne teaches you to become self-reliant, original and builds individual initiative into the soldier. That's because the men of the Airborne drop behind lines, into isolated spots, into difficult terrain where every man must be able to do the work of
