Lemon Prorate Successful In State
(Continued from page 1)
The lower sales volume within California is probably directly due to the overall prorate, Armstrong explained. Last year, without the instrasate prorate more lemons were offered for sale in California. Many of them were purchased in the Los Angeles and San Francisco markets and "boot-legged" out of the state by speculators who sold them at good prices in competition with fruit moving interstate under legitimate prorate. Thus shippers received a much lower price on California sales and, in addition, found the same fruit undermining their eastern market.
The Exchange has proposed at government hearings that orange shipments be placed under an overall prorate similar to the lemon marketing order.

ultimate success, Richmond said.
When the third ballot came, the California delegation was polled individually; every delegate was for Dewey, just as they had been for Warren before he released them.
Warren's acceptance of the vice presidential nomination was after he had assurances from Dewey that it would be "an important job" and that he actually would have much responsibility if elected, Richmond said.
"The party acquired an outstanding team," Richmond declared. "Either man could fill either job with credit."
Vice Chairman Edward S. Shattuck of the Republican State Central Committee was last member.
H. Kuchel; secretary John Hamlin of the Republican State Central committee; and Assemblyman Earl W. Stanley of Newport Beach.
Both Assembly Speaker Sam L. Collins of Fullerton and State Senator Clyde Watson of Orange were in Sacramento attending a meeting of the board of regents of University of California.

A permit was denied for the use of City Park and environs for a two-day celebration of Mexican Independence September 15 and 16 on the ground that street dancing is prohibited by city ordinance which also confines the use of the park's Greek theatre to city organizations.
Walter Kluthe was granted a variance to operate an ammonia fertilizer business in the triangle formed by Center street, Tustin avenue and Anaheim-Olive road. He displayed sketches of his office, loading platform and the fence with which he proposes to surround them. The area is zoned for neighborhood business. Also the council upheld action of the city planning commission which denied Paul L. Sanford a variance to use property at 201 South Claudina street, in a multiple residence zone, for cutting and treating dust cloths for automobiles.

Vice Chairman Edward S. Shattuck of the Republican State Central Committee was last speaker, calling upon Republicans to heed the early-day warning of Lincoln that "we must think anew and act anew." He called for a revived interest in affairs political, to make the Republican party truly "for the people and by the people."
"Too long," he declared, "have people lost their voice in their own government. Dewey and Warren have demonstrated their ability to return government to the people," and he declared that "this will be a victory not for Republicans but for the people."
Special guests of the dinner were Mrs. Jean Fuller of Encino, president of the Southern Division of the Council of Republican Women; Mrs. Henry Kuchel, mother of State Controller Thomas Anaheim Gazette since 1870.
