Orange Market Forges Ahead; Lemons Drop (Continued from page 1) on a level with last week and were expected to remain so until weather grows hotter in the consuming centers. Reports from the east indicated last week California Valencias were receiving prominent mention in retailers' advertisements. But so was canned orange juice. Kroger, one of the big eastern chain markets, advertised two 46 ounce tins of orange juice for 45 cents. And Florida was still in the Philadelphia and New York markets with a few cars of its big Valencias which averaged $3.65 delivered. Lemon sales for June set an all-time on dollar returns, totaling almost $7 million, more than a million and a half dollars ahead of June last year. Sales for the month were 108 less than all-time volume record set in June, 1941, but the f.o.b. average for that month was $3.22. Field men of the Orange Administrative committee say the southern California orange crop is picking out heavier than the estimate of a total of 52,500 cars but they expect eliminations to be heavier as the season advances. Meantime the zoo is being cared for by Wesley Dickenson who was associated for a decade with Mrs. Wiley is her venture. Mr. Dickenson said several offers had been made for certain specimens in the zoo since Mrs. Wiley's death, but nothing could be done toward accepting any of these offers until the inheritance tax appraiser had an opportunity to place his valuation upon the collection. This valuation, Mr. Dickenson predicted, would be but a small fraction of the valuation of the collection published in some southern California newspapers. He said the total would be under $5,000. A collection of snakes which had been started by air express from Australia before news of the death of Mrs. Wiley reached there arrived at the Cypress zoo Monday. The shipment included a pair of giant blue-tongued skinks and a tiger snake. The skinks are non-poisonous and are valued by collectors for their vivid blue tongues which contrast sharply with their grey skins. But the tiger snake, Mr. Dickenson said, is regarded as the most poisonous reptile in the world. There are about 200 species of poisonous snakes in Australia, he said, but the tiger alone is responsible for half the deaths from snake bite on that continent. The Wiley zoo will be open again to the public next Sunday, Mr. Dickenson said. At that time California's general fund took in almost half a billion dollars during the year ending last June 30, and after paying current obligations, had 30 million dollars more cash than it had one year ago, according to State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel. While general fund receipts were thus increasing, Kuchel pointed out specific revenue receipts, such as the personal income tax and liquor taxes, were smaller than the previous year. The cash excess over current obligations at the close of the fiscal year was $125,742,746, or $30,642,- Kuchel Finds State’s General Fund Has Grown $30,000,000 in Past Year 072 above that reported 30,1947. He noted also that during the year Lions Clubs were established in four additional countries: Sweden, Switzerland, Chile and Newfoundland. Briggs, in accepting the presence, said: "Peace is the num- one problem of today. It is our first obligation against our sports and resources. It is the primary obligation of our genera- tion. Since Lions International is fully interested in every conducive movement for world peace and good will around the world, it shall be our unwavering pose to see to it that well-qualified representatives of our organization attend all meetings of Specialized Agencies of the United Nations, such as UNESCO, that appears that we can be of value by collectors for their vivid blue tongues which contrast sharply with their grey skins.
