"HANK" SAYS... Authorization has been received this week for the enlistment of 18 year olds for a one year period for service with the Army or Air Force. The number that can be enlisted from Orange county is small so it's first come first served. A veteran of nearly six years service in the Army Air Forces in both the European Theater and Asiatic Theater, has just re-enlisted as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Air Force. He is Robert E. Eakins, 27, who has resided with his wife and three sons at 9722 Valdina, Free Way, Anaheim. During his prior service he was at Pearl Harbor when the Nips appeared on that fateful December in 1941 and experienced the destruction in England caused by the V-2 Rockets in 1944. Eakins has two brothers now serving in the Air Force one of whom holds a Major's commission, the other is also a Staff Sergeant. He chose an assignment at the Long Beach Air Force Base. In an effort to acquaint some of the younger men, contemplating enlistment in the U. S. Army, with the work and advantages of the various branches of service, this column will attempt to outline one each week. First let's start with the Field Artillery. First let’s start with the Field Artillery. The Field Artillery is one of the most fascinating and instructive branches of service. It offers almost every type of interesting work and experience in many modern technical subjects which prepares you for a fine future, if you decide to leave the service upon the completion of your enlistment. This is a service that relies on punch, stamina and ingenuity. Whether you are interested in the Rocket Battalions, the sound and flash battalions, pack howitzers, self-propelled or tractor units, headquarters work, or any other phase of the Field Artillery training, you will be given plenty of opportunity to learn any one of many trades which mean advancement in the Army and a foundation for many civilian jobs. Modern fire power is both complicated and highly technical. You may be trained as a meteorologist, a precision instrument man, an automotive technician or a communication specialist. In fire control work, mathematics, the use of charts, transits and a dozen other scientific things are part of the training of a good “Red Leg.” Radar, radio, telephone, radio-sonde and all types of up-to-the-minute devices are in constant use in the Field Artillery. Experts are on hand to give the most personalized instruction, both in the classroom and in the field. The latest textbooks and moving pictures, the best techniques and operative methods are taught by men who are masters in their profession. In this way, you will become a skilled technician. For only skilled technicians, the men with a specialized trade, is found in the Field Artillery. That’s why American gunners are admitted by all armies to be the finest in the world. Tourists Still Pour Into State A suspicion that California's tourist boom was subsiding is dispelled by figures just released by Automobile Club of Southern California. An influx of out-of-state cars, carrying more than 1,000,000 passengers, entered the state during the first six months of this year. First-half totals showed a record-breaking 448,325 "foreign" cars, carrying 1,183,175 passengers, being checked into California this year as compared to 436,217 cars and 1,169,008 passengers for the similar period of 1947's peak travel year. The club said 397,216 California cars returned to this state during the first six months of this year, giving additional evidence that California motorists are the greatest "gypsies" in the nation.
