Anaheim Gazette, July 15, 1948 LOS MIGUELITOS ENJOY BEACH PARTY Twilight surf swimming followed by a Wiener roast, with all the trimmings, were enjoyed by 21 members of Los Miguelitos, young people's group of St. Michael's Episcopal church, last Sunday evening. President of the church organization is Alex Deverall. BABY BOY BORN Proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Magdaleno, Route 5, Box 10911, Anaheim, who welcomed a baby son at Orange county hospital last Sunday. The newcomer weighed eight pounds, four ounces. The site of San Diego was first visited by Europeans in 1859. ENJOY THE OUTDOORS -- AT HOME Red Cross Swimming Classes at AUH City Plunges Those unable to swim may advantage of the beginner classes scheduled for the sun at the city park pool under direction of Miss Alia Mae Den, Red Cross swimming structor, sponsored by the chapter of the American Cross. Morning class sessions are conducted each week, Tuesday Saturday, inclusive, at 9:45, 11:15 and 12 o'clock. Miss Bearden was the o'class instructor last year and assisted this season by Sweeney. John Wallin is the plunge director. Regular recreational swim during hot summer days may enjoyed from 1:30 to 9 o'clock each afternoon and evening, day through Friday. Saturday pool opens at 1:30 p.m. and at 7 o'clock. Sunday hours from 1 to 6 o'clock in the noon and evening. As announced by the Gail last week, persons having banners certificates may enroll in Cross sponsored classes at Anaheim Union high school Dick Glover is in charge of courses, assisted by Irwin N Jr., Red Cross instructor. The schedule is as follows: 8:45 a.m. — Boys 14 years under who have passed the banners tests. 10 to 11 a.m. — Advanced class in diving and swimming 11 to 12 noon — Advanced 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. — Boys' girls' intermediate swimming 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. — Water family night are Tuesdays Thursdays, 5 to 6:30 o'clock. A native of Missouri, he had lived in California for 43 years and had spent the past 27 years in Brea. For many years he was an employee of the Union Oil Company. Those surviving include his widow, Mrs. Marguerite M. Lemmon; one son, Roy Lemmon of Fullerton; four sisters, Mrs. Lillie Moore of Missouri, Mrs. Clara Holden and Mrs. Nora Benedict, both of Turlock, California, and Mrs. Frankie Woodward of Louisiana, and two grandchildren, Milfred and Frank Lemmon of Fullerton. Entombment was in Loma Vista mausoleum. 433 County Men Enlist in Army During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1948, the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force enlisted 433 Orange county men, according to an announcement by Major John S. Muir, Commanding Officer of the six Recruiting stations in this area, located at Santa Ana, Fullerton, Anaheim, Orange, Newport Beach and Whittier. “There has been a decided increase in the number of enlistments since the passage of the draft law,” said Major Muir, “many men of draft age preferring the advantages of volunteer enlistment such as choice of branch of service and duty assignment.” “During the last week in June” he disclosed, “more men were enlisted than during the three previous weeks, and applications are being received at present in increasing numbers.” Punke Services Held Wednesday Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Katharina Punke, 77, North Clementine street Punke Services Held Wednesday Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Katharina Punke, 77, 221 North Clementine street, yesterday (Wednesday) at 2 o'clock in the Zion Lutheran church, with the Rev. L. E. Eifert, pastor, officiating. She died Sunday night at Nightengale Sanitarium in Orange. Born December 1, 1870, in Germany, Mrs. Punke had lived in Anaheim since 1915. She was a member of Zion Lutheran church and the Ladies' Aid. She is survived by her husband and one nephew, F. W. Thieman of Anaheim. Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Anaheim cemetery. Solano county has 870 miles of highway, 113 miles paved and 610 miles surfaced.
