Deciduous Fruit Shipments Show Sharp Decline
Although prices in the east for California deciduous fruits this year have been slightly higher than last, the lateness of the growing season has had a marked effect on the farmers pocket book.
This was indicated by the market news service, which compared a 1605 carlot shipment of all deciduous fruit to date this year from California, to 4293 at the same time last year.
The early peach market for California growers was just about nullified, as this state has shipped only 23 cars to date this year, compared to 415 last year. The national total, however, saw 1,877 cars shipped from all U.S. points this year, compared to 1,126 last, with a price drop of from $1.97 to $1.65 on the average.
Prices on apricots increased from $2.66 last year to $3.77 this year, per lug on the average, but the state's farmers have shipped only 207 cars to date this year, compared to 721 at the same time in 1947.
Cherry shipments from California totaled 451 cars this year, compared to 822 last, and plums dropped from 2,193 last year to 876 at the present time.
Net effect, it was pointed out, is a decreased return to the grower, as generally, prices have not increased to take care of the decrease in shipment.

Colony Quips
(Continued from page 1)
and as soon as the fact about the wig percolated through the students heads a lively school year was anticipated. The plots against that wig numbered into the millions. The first day the class took up formally there was a tremendous undercurrent of anticipation. That wig was going to catch it and everyone knew it. The professor announced that first he would write the names of the class on the blackboard and asked for the first name, which, when given; he proceeded to turn his back to the class and transcribe on the board. The class sat expectantly. Then in the middle of the name Professor X stopped, lifted the wig with one hand and with the other scratched the top of his head. A laugh broke out and he turned to the class with this explanation: 'I am troubled with sinus and wear this wig only to keep from catching cold.'
That took all the fun out of it and all the plans to expose his bald head died aborning.
14 Local Cadets At Encampment
Fourteen cadets from Anaheim Union high school participated in marksmanship firing and specialized advanced training at the 13-day California Cadet Corps encampment, which closed Tuesday at Camp San Luis Obispo, Lt. Col. Charles A. Royston, state Corps director announced.
The local youths who attended the encampment had completed their basic orientation course here as members of the Anaheim unit of the California High School Cadet Corps.
Headed by Capt. L. E. Middleton, assistant school commandant, the Anaheim cadets were instructed with cadets from throughout the state in intensive leadership and character development courses.
The local unit was honored by having two of the cadet Regimental staff from this city, Richard E. Hoxie, a lieutenant-colonel, and Herschel E. Coulter, a sergeant of the staff.

Florida Growers Want It on Label
Florida citrus growers are busy with a proposed law which is of interest to California growers. The proposed law would make it mandatory for bottlers of carbonated or other bottled drinks to show how much citrus juice is actually contained in drinks purportedly containing citrus juices.
Florida growers feel too many so-called citrus juice drinks contain relatively little citrus juice.
