Arturo M. Acevedo Claimed by Death Arturo M. Acevedo, year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Miguel Acevedo of Placentia, passed away at the home at 144 South Main street, in that city. He was born in Placentia. Surviving are his parents and one brother. Recitation of Holy Rosary was held at the home last Tuesday evening at 7:30 with Mass at St. Joseph's church in Placentia on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment was in Holy Sepulchre cemetery. BABY BOY BORN Proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. Clark Brown, 308 Kroeger street, Anaheim. Their baby son arrived at Fullerton General hospital, Wednesday of last week. NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY JOINT PICNIC SLATED Several thousand persons are expected to attend the New York-New Jersey joint annual picnic at Bixby Park, Lohg Beach, all day Sunday, June 11. A two-hour variety program beginning with a concert by the Long Beach Municipal band at 1 o'clock in the afternoon will be featured. Registration lists will aid picnickers in finding acquaintances. The public is invited to attend, Harriet C. Bowen, publicity chairman, announced. NEW DAUGHTER A baby daughter was welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Pittser, P.O. State School Fund Gives Lift To Westminster The Westminster school district has been allocated $271,125 by the State Allocations Board. The funds were sought under terms of the impoverished school district act, which appropriated 55 million dollars for school buildings. A request for $150,252, from the Costa Mesa school, was deferred by the board until a future date. At previous meetings, the board allocated approximately 22 million dollars, leaving a balance of some 32 millions which has been distributed on a tentative commitment basis. H. H. Jaqueth, chief of the division of allocations, said applications on file had totaled more than 63 million dollars, but some were disqualified. He said funds were sufficient to aid most of the remaining qualified districts. Aparicio Given Two Sentences 25 Years to Life Leo G. Aparicio, Anaheim, was accused of conducting a one-man crime wave that extended from Santa Ana to El Monte one night last month has been sentenced on two counts of armed robbery and one of kidnapping. On the kidnapping he was sentenced from one to 25 years and on the two armed robbery counts he was sentenced for 25 years to life for each. He had been out of San Quentin only a few months where he served time for a knife attack. While he was at liberty he kidnapped his former wife on the day of her marriage to another man and escaped in the intended bridegroom's car. June isn't the only month for brides. Personnel Men At Encampment Anaheim was well represented in the personnel department during the annual California high school cadet encampment which closed Tuesday at San Luis Obispo with Lt. Col. Richard E. Hoxie of Anaheim Union high school, the Cadet regimental personnel officer; Cadet 1st Lt. William Burr, Jr., also of Anaheim, assistant personnel officer. Heading the personnel section was Major Victor E. Taylor, assistant commandant of cadets of southern California Military academy, Long Beach. Cadet Capt. Stanley D. Miller, Sweetwater Union high school, National City, was personnel clerk for the section. More than 600 youths attended the encampment. County Jobless Still Above 2000 Unemployment insurance claimants in the Santa Ana department of employment office total 2,056 for the week ending June 17. Out of the total number filing claims, the department paid, 1,369. Mrs. Vincenta D. Carleton is attending the national Business and Professional Women's Convention as Anaheim club delegate. Oberlag who recently became owner of the jewelery store formerly managed by A. D. Erwin, 127 East Center street, this city. Oberlag, who has been in the jewelery business for 40 years, calls Wentzville, Missouri, his home town. Previous to coming here he owned a store in Ridgecrest, near Inyokern, California. After selling it he retired for two years, but "got lonesome for the profession again." Included in Oberlag's collection of rare objects is an exact copy of the Declaration of Independence, copyrighted in 1818 with the approval of John Quincy Adams. Another is a one dollar bill, Sears of 1896, boasting a pictorial scene symbolizing liberty on the front side and oval pictures of George and Martha Washington on the back. The new Anaheim resident specializes in engraving on all metals except stainless steel. Erwin and his wife and young daughter are in Texas. Citrus Puts in Bid for Share Of European D.P.s Of the 205,000 Displaced Persons which the 80th Congress in its closing hours voted to admit to the United States, the citrus industry of southern California can absorb about 2000, the Agricultural Producers Labor Committee of California has advised the Bureau of Immigration of the U.S. State department. As the new law works out, most of the D. P. S.. will be Poles and Czechs, and 30 per cent must have agricultural background and experience. The California committee advised the Bureau of Immigration that the farmers of this state are prepared to guarantee 10 months Herbert Gyde Services Held Funeral services were conducted for Herbert Gyde, 72, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at Hilgenfeld chapel with the Rev. O. L. Underwood, pastor of the Four-Square Gospel church of Anaheim, officiating. Gyde died Friday evening at his home, 9231 Orange avenue, Anaheim, after a prolonged illness. A native of Michigan, he had lived in California for 50 years and came to Anaheim two years ago from Riverside. He was a member of the Four-Square Gospel church of this city. Surviving are his wife, Cora O. Gyde, of the family home; one son, Urban F. Gyde of Los Angeles; one granddaughter, Natalie Ray Gyde; one grandson, Richard Thomas Gyde, both of Los Angeles, and seven sisters all residing in Michigan. Interment was in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Los Angeles. New Managers at Bowling Academy New co-managers of the Anaheim Bowling Academy on South Los Angeles street, are two young veterans, Bill Acton of Route 1, Box 175, Harding, and Lynn Arnett, Route 2, Box 417, Lincoln avenue, Anaheim. The business formerly was managed by Frank and Leona Kaminsky of this city. Negotiations for a new lease with Richard Clark, building owner, were completed recently. A new feature at the academy is free afternoon instruction in bowling technique for beginners through the courtesy of the management. During World War II, Arnett, single, served three years in the United States Army, seeing overseas action in the Philippines. Acton, married, was a storekeeper in the Navy and served in the South Pacific theater. Both men are graduates of Anaheim Union. Tall Sales Tax Total Paid by Orange County (Western News Service) Taxable sales in Orange county showed an increase for the quarter of 1948 over the same period in 1947, the State Board Equalization says. Taxable sales in the county totaled $41,903,880, returning the state,$1,047,597, or 2½ percent in sales tax. The sales were up 12.53 percent over the same period a year ago, and represented 1.60 per cent of the total state sales tax. In all counties of California $2,620,486,760 worth of goods sold during the three more periods representing an overall crease of 8.96 per cent for quarter. The sales returned $65,512 to the state in sales tax, the board announced, and both the re-sales and revenues were second highest in the history of the tax. Motor vehicles sales, the board said, soared to an all-time high more than 325 million dollars, returned more than eight million of sales tax revenue. Generally, groups dealing luxury items, as well as the meat and drink category, showed creases in sales for the quarter. "This is probably due to increasing per cent of the farm income going into the rising need of necessities," the board nounced. John A. Fullerton Woman Dies Monday Mrs. Josefina Corrales Compise, 65, died early Monday afternoon at 123 East Maple avenue, Fullerton, after a brief illness. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, she had been a resident of California for 13 years and of Fullerton for the past seven years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mary Landeros of Mexico, Mrs. Anita Rivera and Mrs. Frances Coloma, both of Fullerton; one half-sister, Mrs. Rafaela Compise of Placentia, and 17 grandchildren. Recitation of the Holy Rosary was yesterday (Wednesday) evening at 8 o'clock at Hilgenfeld chapel, Anaheim. Mass was read in St. Mary's Catholic church, Fullerton, this morning (Thursday) at 9 o'clock. Interment was in the Holy Sepulcher cemetery. Mrs. Mary Fiscus Last Rites Read Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Elizabeth Fiscus, 88, of Anaheim yesterday (Wednesday) morning at 10 o'clock at Hilgenfeld chapel with Rev. Woodrow Rood, pastor of the First Baptist church of Montebello, officiating. She died early Sunday morning at an Orange hospital after a prolonged illness. A native of Indiana, she had lived in California for the past 26 years, 25 of which she spent in Anaheim. Before moving here, she had resided with her son, Monte C. Fiscus of Brea. Interment was in Loma Vista Memorial Park.
