Statistics on flood and damage often tell how many of crops were destroyed but do not tell how many future were washed away with the soil of the land that went into the river or how much was blown away in the win.
E. H. Spoor, chairman of California PMA committee, out that it is startling to figure the loss when the top-soil moved from a farm. An in-top-soil from nearly 5 m acres would be required to the Mississippi River dump annual load of 730 million into the Gulf of Mexico. Erosion were limited to a million acres, it would take a few years to strip this down to the subsoil.

It’s Ro-Day-O Time---Fish, That Is
Illinois Conservation Director Livingston E. Osborn releases the first prize fish, a big bass, into Nippersink Lake for the Illinois Fishing Rodeo. Mayor Arthur Amundsen of nearby Fox Lake looks on. continues unchecked for a period of 10, 50 and 100 years, the results in terms of food are tremendous.
“It is potential food that goes down the river in the flood and blows away in the wind. It is the means of sustaining life — in a way it is life itself — which is lost. To check this loss is the real purpose of the Agricultural Conservation Program.”
NO CHANGE IN EGG SUPPORT LEVEL
Government price suports for farm sold in the Midwest continue sides and gravity helps in the movement.
The Agricultural Conservation Program is helping farmers with soil and water conservation practices which do a lot to keep the farm home, the chairman points out. At this time of the year pasture improvement is specifically emphasized. He explains that it is not so much how many cows can be kept on a pasture after phosphate has been used as it is how much of the pasture can be kept on the farm instead of having
NOT MUCH FOOD
FOR THE FLOOD?
Statistics on flood and wind damage often tell how many acres of crops were destroyed but they not tell how many future crops are washed away with the top-soil of the land that went down in river — or how much food is blown away in the wind.
E. H. Spoor, chairman of the California PMA committee, points out that it is startling to figure out loss when the top-soil is reived from a farm. An inch of top-soil from nearly 5 million acres would be required to keep Mississippi River dumping its actual load of 730 million tons to the Gulf of Mexico. If this erosion were limited to a certain million acres, it would take only few years to strip this land down to the subsoil.
But, says the chairman, soil loss often thought of in terms of crops really becomes startling. A fact a million acres of cropland destroyed each year by erosion usually means that so much getables, fruit, wheat, cotton, potatoes, pasture, beef, milk and grass will not be produced. It is not at a loss for this year or next year but the loss goes on year after year.
The chairman points out, the extent of vital concern to the erosion "is the 25 to 40 sacks of hay which can never be probed from the soil that is gone. Is the 200 sacks of potatoes per hectare — the 20 sacks of wheat — the 3 or 4 tons of hay — that not be produced because the soil is not there. If the soil loss is potential food that goes down the river in the flood and blows away in the wind. It is the means of sustaining life — in a way it is life itself — which is lost. To check this loss is the real purpose of the Agricultural Conservation Program."
NO CHANGE IN EGG SUPPORT LEVEL
Government price suports for eggs sold in the Midwest continue during July at the same level as during May and June, the Department of Agriculture has announced. This means that firms selling dried eggs to the Department under its current programs must certify that they have paid producers prices reflecting an average of at least 35 cents a dozen for all shell eggs they buy.
IS YOUR FARM COMING OR GOING?
Are you driving your farm away from home? The question is raised by Roy L. Hall, chairman of the Orange Agricultural Conservation Committee. He points out that there may be a good fence around the place but unless the soil is treated it can jump the fence in a good wind or crawl under in a good rain. "The fence may still be there but the farm may be gone. And the part first to go is the top soil, the part from which come the crops."
And, according to the chairman, good top soil is getting away from most farmers every year. On some farms — where the land has been overworked and "underfed" — it may be getting away rapidly. Some soils erode easier than others. Some farms are on hill-movement.
The Agricultural Conservation Program is helping farmers with soil and water conservation practices which do a lot to keep the farm home, the chairman points out. At this time of the year pasture improvement is specifically emphasized. He explains that it is not so much how many cows can be kept on a pasture after phosphate has been used as it is how much of the pasture can be kept on the farm instead of having it wash or blow away.
Improving the pasture so that it will keep more cows is important but it is also important to tie the land down with grass and legumes so they will be there indefinitely and keep on producing.
Across the slope plowing and cultivating, terraces where they are needed, trees for wind break, dams to stop the run-off, sod waterways, strip-cropping — all are conservation practices in the program which are set up to help farmers hold their land, the chairman points out.
LICENSES REVOKED
Two Anaheim automobile drivers were among the 24 in Orange county issued orders of revocation, suspension and probation during May by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, it was announced today.
Suspensions were ordered for Ralph M. Gregg, 510 N. Olive, and Paul U. Stevens, Rt. 2, Box 165, both for convictions of driving while intoxicated.
California's devastating drought of 1862 took the lives of many cattle and ruined rich cattle barons.
