The decision to make the matter one of investigation by the State legislature was announced by Senator George J. Hatfield of Merced; chairman of the joint legislative interim committee on agriculture and livestock problems. It was the Hatfield committee which las tyear toured Mexico investigating the hoof and mouth disease and returned with a report which won the commendation of livestock ranchers throughout the state, as well as that of Governor Earl Warren. Hatfield said he may recommend to the Senate that a committee be sent to the Islands to gain first hand information of the fly. Meanwhile, he stated, he will attend the meeting of county agricultural commissioners to be held at Shasta Springs May 26, 27 and 28, at which Colin G. Lennox, president of the Board of Agriculture and Forestry of the Hawaiian Islands, will discuss the problem the Formosan fly has presented to the Pacific Islands. The Sacramento river is navigable for a distance of 180 miles.
