Orange County GOP Organizes For Phillips Organization of committees to work for reelection of Congressman John Phillips was being completed this week throughout all of Orange county, as the primary election campaign swung into high gear for the June 1 vote. The Phillips-for-Congress volunteers will issue literature, do active precinct work and otherwise operate to inform the public. Palestine Oranges Grow Too Big Says Anaheim Man Home from Holy Land Aside from their bloody religious war, the orange growers of Palestine have two production problems, one of which has been largely overcome in California and the other of which is of growing perplexity in southern California. One has to do with decay which no longer is a major problem of the industry in California. The other has to do with fruit sizes. But in contrast with southern California, the Palestine oranges grow too large instead of too small. Seventy percent of this year's crop runs to 176s and larger. As a consequence, orange packers in that country are interested just how in a device that will eliminate 120s and larger as too big to handle profitably. Stanley McCluskey, foreman of the Anaheim territory for the Brogdex Company, recently returned from a six-month's stay in Palestine, where he had ample opportunities for making many observations on citrus development, as well as on the endless political warfare. He was in charge of the installation of the first Brogdex processing unit to be used in Palestine. He came in contact with all phases of the citrus industry. Decay during shipment is their biggest problem, sometimes being as high as 50 percent, McCluskey says. Practically all oranges are shipped to England through the harbor at Tel'Aviv. Lack of proper harbor facilities necessitates the fruit being loaded on barges and towed out to the anchored ships. Fruit often has to be held box, so American box-making machines which are badly needed may be imported and used. Due to cheap labor, everything in connection with the growing and packing of citrus has been done by hand, including all cultivation. No tractors are used. The irrigation, fertilization and sprouting programs are about the same as those of California, except that all of the work is done by hand. The climate during the winter months is similar to that in southern California, but summers are usually much hotter. The rainfall, coming during the winter averages from 13 to 16 inches. During the warmest seasons the Mediterranean fruit fly is the worst pest, but it is not very prevalent this year. All packing is done as it was in the United States some years ago. Oranges are piled on the ground by size and grade each individual's orchard, wrapped by hand, and packed in hand-made boxes. The fruit is never washed. Sometimes rude sheds are utilized for packing, but the same crude methods prevail. Vets Gain On U. S. Payroll The number of federal employees in California decreased during the calendar year of 1947 and so did the number of veterans employed in civil service of the federal government, but the percentage of veterans in federal employment within the state increased from 43 per cent in 1946 to 47 per cent in 1947. CONG. JOHN PHILLIPS as to the record of the veteran Representative, still in Washington after twice cancelling recent plans to tour his district. As vice-chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, Phillips has had a major part of the work of that group, since he is an accountant as well as a Congressman. He thus is in position to fine-tooth comb the budgets of the bureaus and departments of the government. This committee also has been at work to eliminate some overlapping agencies and bureaus. It is but one of the several important committees on which Phillips is a ranking member by reason of his long service. A marriage license was issued to Thurman Alfred Hensley, Manhattan Beach, and Julia Marian Kuczek of Anaheim, Saturday, at the county court house in Santa Ana. Decay during shipment is their biggest problem, sometimes being as high as 50 percent, McCluskey says. Practically all oranges are shipped to England through the harbor at Tel-Aviv. Lack of proper harbor facilities necessitates the fruit being loaded on barges and towed out to the anchored ships. Fruit often has to be held in storage on the docks from 10 to 15 days, awaiting favorable tides. And this compels repacking and removing all the decayed fruit. Thirteen million cases of oranges will be exported this year; ten million had been shipped before McCluskey left Palestine. The Shamouti is the principal variety of orange. It is oval-shaped and larger than the Washington navel. Also, Palestine has Valencias similar to those in California. Very few other varieties of citrus are grown. In Palestine, around 240 orange trees are planted to the acre and the average yield is two boxes to the tree, the boxes weighing 100 pounds each. Packers, lately, have petitioned the local marketing board to allow use of a smaller installation of the first Brogdex processing unit to be used in Palestine. He came in contact with all phases of the citrus industry. Vets Gain On U. S. The total number of federal employees within the state decreased from 212,912 in 1946 to 188,917 in 1947. The total number of veterans in federal employment decreased from 91,965 in 1946 only to 89,719 in 1947. About one-fourth of all federal employee work for the post office department and about half of all federal employes work for the various military establishment and the Veterans Administration. Imagine packing 500 voles together in a tube no bigger than a pencil and sorting them out distinctly at the end! That's what we're doing with coaxial cable. Radio-type waves whisk calls through pipes...instead of on wires...allowing one "co-ax" to do the work of a number of the more usual kinds of long distance cable. 2. We plant "co-ax" with giant plows that lay the cable in one operation. Every eight miles a "booster station" keeps calls going through clearly. For—incredible as it seems—high frequency waves fade so rapidly in the cable that all the sun's energy, if it could be funneled into the pipes, would not carry half-way across the country. 3. "End of the line"...it takes huge panels of complex equipment like this to sort out the calls carried by just one cable. Since December, calls have been going back and forth from the Coast to the East over 2300 miles of "co-ax." And we're adding still more cables to augment long distance service for the growing telephone population on the Coast. Millions of new working dollars, needed to extend and improve service, must come—not from telephone bills—but from thousands of people who put their savings to work in the telephone business. To attract these working dollars, we must pay a reasonable amount for their use. We can do this only if we sell our services at fair and adequate prices.
