Maybe They’ll Get to State’s ‘Worst Crossing’ (Western News Service) A state-wide survey of all grade crossings in California has been one-third completed by engineers of the California Public Utilities Commission. R. E. Mittelstaedt. The other day I came across this editorial printed in the New York Times, April 5, 1948, and because we think it is especially good and appropriate to this time, would like to quote it. Reality — And UMT “In many American homes it is customary for husband and wife to set aside an evening perhaps once a week, perhaps once a month, for the purpose of going over the family budget. Suppose that on such an occasion George Jones, husband, and father of four growing children, running down the list of items, came to the one designated “life insurance premiums.” Suppose he stopped there, pondered the figure a moment, addressed Mrs. Jones as follows: lows: “See here, why do we have to keep up these silly insurance payments? What do we have to show for them? Do you realize that for this much money we could buy a new car every four years, or could afford to join the Country Club, or take long vacation trip we’re always talking about? This way we’re just pouring money down the drain.” period: Measles, 107; chickenpox, mumps, 31; Streptococcal infection, 4 and whooping cough, Samantha E. Milltakes by Death Samantha E. Mills, 85 year age, passed away at the Anaheim Community hospital on Thursday of last week, April 29. Born Iowa, she has resided in Anaheim and Fullerton village for the past 40 years, making home on the ranch at 7241 Sp Road. Surviving are two sons, Mills of the ranch home, and Mills of Compton; one daughter Mrs. Gertrude Stull of the nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary with Mass Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock from St. Boniface church. Interment was in Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Motorcycle Cop To Be Replaced By Car Cops Elimination of motorcycles on state highways in all “dense metropolitan traffic” was promised here by State Patrol Commissioner Cliff E. Petersen. At the same time Petersen ended this policy did not mean laxation in the enforcement speed laws. “We are replacing the mills with fast, heavy cars which proven more satisfactory in my motorcars are capable of attaining high or even higher speeds—the motorbikes.” He said the primary reason taking off the bulk of motorcars in service was because “they proved too hazardous and practical in foggy, wet or weather.” The patrol will eventually erate with a total of only motorcycles in service through the state, the commissioner closed. More than 115 have removed from patrol this year said. Set Telephone Hour Programs Four distinguished concerns will be heard on the rearing Monday night Telephone. Maybe They'll Get to State's 'Worst Crossing' (Western News Service) A state-wide survey of all grade crossings in California has been one-third completed by engineers of the California Public Utilities Commission, R. E. Mittelstaedt, commission president, announced. He said that a report received from Ward Hall, commission supervising transportation engineer, disclosed that 4543 of the approximately 13,000 grade crossings in the state have been inspected by engineering crews. Hall's report additionally disclosed that the survey is making various public bodies "grade crossing conscious" and that many recommendations have been made for crossing improvements, including improving the view of approaching trains; widening pavements, reducing grades of approach, and installing additional crossing warning signs and signals. Conrad H. Narten Passes Wednesday Conrad H. Narten, 85 years of age, passed away at Fullerton hospital on Wednesday, May 5. Born in Germany, he had resided in Anaheim since 1946, making his home at the Lutheran home. He is survived by a stepson, Howard Cobley of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Funeral services were conducted from the chapel of the mortuary this morning (Thursday) at 10:30 o'clock with the Rev. L. E. Eifert, pastor of Zion Lutheran church, officiating. Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary prepared the body for shipment by air express to Blue Island, Ill., where burial will be in the family plot. Job printing. The Gazette. Phone 2206. The implied assumption that if Congress didnt vote the sum required for UMT it would "give 1,000 colleges $2,000,000 each," is purely gratuitous. It is a dialectical mirage. The question is not how we could make the best use of weather. The patrol will eventually erate with a total of only motorcycles in service through the state, the commissioner closed. More than 115 have removed from patrol this year said. Set Telephone Hour Programs Four distinguished concernists will be heard on Monday night Telephone broadcasts over NBC station 9 o'clock this month. Next Monday's program feature Miss Licia Albanese, ed Italian soprano, who is appearing for the first time. She sing favorite operatic songs. It is how we can ensure ourselves against possible tastrophe in a very important world. The issue in short, is one insurance premiums versus a car or a country club membership. There may be room to bate on what is the best kinsurance: There may be room debate on what the issue of insurance. Last column told how the Exchange maintains an extra-high-speed market news service, keeping all Exchange shippers informed of the changes in citrus demand and prices from hour to hour. Another advantage Exchange growers have is a different and better kind of sales representation in the markets where their fruit is sold. The Exchange selling force is made up of men employed by the growers themselves. You can see why that's important... The men in the 56 Exchange sales offices throughout the United States and Canada have just one job—to sell Exchange oranges, lemons and grapefruit. They never have to worry about apples or potatoes or fifteen other produce items. Their jobs and their advancement depend on how well they sell citrus, and they are trained to that one task. They think citrus 100% of the time. It stands to reason that these men...
