Social and Club Activities GRACE THOMPSON Phone 2206 DOLLS MARCH IN REVIEW AT JUNIOR LIBRARY NEXT WEEK Beginning today (Thursday) through April 9, Pinocchio, beloved puppet of the Anaheim Children's library will celebrate his nineteenth birthday. With a myriad of old, beautiful and rare dolls, many of which are foreign visitors, the famed story book wooden boy will preside over festivities in the "hobby lobby" room, usually the office of Miss Elva Haskett, children's librarian. Additional exhibits of rag and soft dolls and animals are arranged throughout the junior reading room. Hours of the open house, to which all citizens are invited, are from 1 o'clock in the afternoon to 9 o'clock in the evening, week days, and from 9 o'clock in the morning until 9 o'clock in the evening, Saturday, Miss Haskett stated. Next Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, a symposium on the subject of dolls will be presented at an informal meeting at the children’s library with Mesdames Ray Tozer, Bruce Ives and several well known collectors speaking. Between 500 and 1000 toys and collectors items are expected to be on display, the exhibit being held again after an absence of two years. Special guest of honor will be Gretchen, wooden girl of an age old enough she will not tell, belonging to Mrs. Ives. Gretchen’s little sister, a smaller chip off the same block, will also be present. Pinocchio’s real birthday is December 25, 1876, when he became a brain child. He arrived here in 1928, courtesy of the McMillan Publishing House, San Francisco, He had lost his left leg and trousers. This accident caused him to be late to a doll show in Ogden, Utah, later that fall. But Pinocchio who delights in entertaining youngsters at shows and in camps, hospitals and schools, made a dramatic entrance, if slightly belated, carrying home to Anaheim many good wishes, a birch-bark letter from Ogden students and a gold framed plaque bearing the city seal and signature of Ogden’s mayor of that year, Harman Peery. The oldest doll attending the party is a dainty china girl, more than 100 years of age, belonging to Zena Bloomfield. Another baby doll, belonging to Mrs. Jerry Schiller, has been crying for more than 45 years. Pinocchio's real birthday is December 25, 1876, when he became a brain child. He arrived here in 1928, courtesy of the McMillan Publishing House, San Francisco, in honor of their large illustrated edition of the book by the same name, published that year. Like most small boys, Pinocchio's history, recorded in a special library scrap book, is one of adventure and varied scrapes. In 1931 during the earthquake, Pinocchio fell from a high book shelf and broke his head. He was in the hospital in north Anaheim during the latter part of February and March of 1938, having a leg and his pate repaired, when the violent flood struck. Mrs. Swanson, wife of the former decorator at the SQR store, ran the doll hospital. Both she and Swanson were the only white residents killed attempting to escape the flood waters by car. Knowing the value of their wooden charge, they took Pinocchio as a passenger in the doomed automobile. Nearly a week later the puppet was found.
