Anaheim, Buena Park GI’s Win Oregon Farms Two county veterans, Harold J. Westerhold, 25, 529 West Broadway, Anaheim, and Cloyce D. Lemke, 32, South Grand Avenue, Buena Park, were among the 44 World War II GI’s who won reclamation project farms near Klamath Falls, Tule Lake area, Oregon, valued at $20,000 each, in a “pickle jar” event conducted Monday by the Reclamation bureau. There was a total of 2,757 applicants for the irrigated homesteads south of Klamath Falls. Single, Westerhold is living with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Westerhold, who will accompany him to Oregon to aid with the farming. Another son, Arnold, died during the war while in service in the Philippines. The Anaheim veteran already knows the Falls country having farmed there for two years before being called into the Army. A native of Pender, Nebraska, young Westerhold attended schools and was reared on a farm there. His parents have lived in Anaheim since 1944 and have cared for their son's farming equipment mainly a tractor "with all the trimmings," stored in the family garage. The redheaded Westerhold served with the 77th Infantry Division seeing action in the South Pacific for 18 months. A veteran of the Okinawa campaign, he was discharged in 1946 with the rank of sergeant. Currently Westerhold is an employee of the Home Oil Company. He is a member of the Zion Luth. Veterans! Apply For Exemptions! Ben Liebermann, director of Veterans Affairs, today urged veteran property owners to file now for their $1,000 property tax exemption to avoid any possibility of overlooking the May 31 deadline for this important veterans’ benefit. The exemption applies against the valuation of property of any veteran whose total property or that of his wife is not valued at $5,000 or more. In many cases, depending upon location of the property, the exemption means $50 or more each year to the veteran through reduction of his tax bill. If the veteran does not own property in his own name valued at $1,000, sufficient property of his wife to make up the authorized total may be exempt. Exemptions being claimed now will apply against 1948-49 tax bills. Applicatpion for the exemption should be made to both the county and city assessors if property is located within an incorporated city; otherwise, only to the county assessor. The filing period extends from the first Monday in March to 5 p.m. on the last Monday in May (March 1 to May 31 this year). The deadline formerly was the last Monday in June, but was changed by the 1947 legislature. Full information regarding this and other veterans' rights and benefits are available to veterans and their dependents without charge at the Orange County Veterans Service Center 225 North Broadway, Santa Ana. 3645 Claims Filed In Orange County County Gets Share Gasoline-Fuel Tax Western News Service Final apportionments for quarter ending December 31 from the highway users tax fund Orange county totaled $205,712 according to a report made too by Thomas H. Realty Board Hears Enderle "Equalization Is the Main Duty of an Assessor" was the topic of County Assessor Maurice F. Enderle who spoke before members of the Anaheim Realty Board at the regular meeting, March 8, Lee's 101 Drive-In. Stressing basic facts, accordition to board members Enderle states that the ratio of assessed value to cash values had nothing to do with the amount of taxes paid that assessors have no information as to the amount of taxes paid individuals and that the tax rate is not determined until month after all valuations have been made." for their son's farming equipment mainly a tractor "with all the trimmings," stored in the family garage. He is a member of the Zion Lutheran church and the church usher's club. Potatoes of grain are crops planned for his farm, he disclosed. The reclamation project farms range in size from 68 acres to 113 acres in size. To date neither vet knows the exact location or size of his land. Lemke, who attended school in Fullerton, has been helping his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Lemke on their farm near Buena Park. The assessor also pointed out that budgets, when approved, determine whether taxes paid will be higher or lower each year. Continuing to suggest possible improvements for the proper tax system, Assessor Enderle said "Due to the wide variance between the hundreds of tax rates established each year in the county, it is impossible to compare taxes, but that valuation should and could be compared." "The sole duty of an assessor is valuing property with equalization of one property with another in mind," he remarked. The speaker pointed out, conclusion, that the Orange county tax rate is the lowest in the sta PRE--EASTER VALUES Sale MEN'S SUITS Good looking always... these fine MEN'S SUITS Good looking always . . . these fine wools and gabardines . . . all to go at these EASY-TO-TAKE-PRICES.
