Honorably discharged Marines residing in Anaheim and vicinity are eligible to attend the first organization meeting of the Anaheim detachment of the Marine Corps League to be held in the city council room of the City Hall at 8 p.m., Friday, March 19, 1948.
Dwight E. Overholser, Commandant, Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Long Beach, will be the principal speaker.

There are Marine Corps League detachments in every state, Hawaii, Samoa, Cuba and Okinawa.

Gain Expected In State Farms
(Western News Service)
California is expected to show a huge gain in the number of farms, acreage under cultivation, and revenue from its diversified crops when the next federal farm census, now in course of preparation, is completed, the State Department of Agriculture has said.
The 1945 farm census showed 134,145 farms in the state with 35,054,379 acres under cultivation, returning $1,426,278,830 to growers who in turn spent $26,384,418 for necessities in farm homes.
The census, on file with the California Crop and Livestock Reporting Service shows Orange county has 5,548 farms; 346,621 acres under cultivation; crop returns for the year totaling $63,-698,723; and value of products purchased by farmers $313,182.
The census will be completed in 1950. The centennial of California's admission to the union, and will form an interesting comparison with estimates of 1850 when agriculture was in its infancy, the service states.
Starting slowly in its first ten years of statehood, California agriculture from that time progressed rapidly until it has reached a point where it leads the nation in 29 crops and second in six others.
All almonds, artichokes, dates, lemons, honeyball melons, and olives produced in the United States are grown in California, says the service, also better than 90 per cent of figs, grapes, plums and walnuts.

We recognize all Republicans and encourage them to join a Republican group of their choice and then work wholeheartedly in electing a president of the United States and other qualified Republican candidates.
"We Young Republicans do not wish to waste our time fighting with anyone within the Republican ranks. Because of the outrageous blundering and old reactionary policies of the small group who seem to dominate the opinions of the Central Committee, they have lost the faith and confidence of the citizens of Orange county by refusing to let all Republican groups cooperate in electing a president of the United States.
"The Central Committee is overstepping its purpose for which elected, and their charges were made to mislead and confuse the public."

Closed Year For Sports Suggested
California's extended drought today brought possibilities of a closed year for hunters and fishermen unless rain brings relief.
The first move to bar hunters from extremely arid sections of the state has been made by the state division of forestry in proposals now before the division of fish and game.
Citing figures to prove that forest fire rates throughout the state climb during deer season, particularly in September, forestry officials have asked fish and game authorities to consider the closing or partially closing of certain sections of the state to deer hunting this year.
The decision on the proposal would have to be made by the fish and game commission and would only be made as a conservation measure to protect the state's forests. No such step would be necessary as a matter of game conservation, officials said.
As for fishermen, the Tuolumne county board of supervisors has led off with the suggestion that the fish and game commission close all streams in that county to anglers during the drought emergency. While no action has been taken by the commission on this proposal, it is expected that other counties would follow suit if the commission were to grant Tuolumne's request.

Investigation of what the military services have to offer enlisted men leads to the conclusion that young men will be breaking down the doors of the recruiting offices, come a depression and unemployment. Smart young men who feel they are temperamentally suited to life in the "New Army," as a career or to obtain valuable training for civilian employment should get in before the rush because now they can pretty well shape their own futures.
The higher pay, retirement and other benefits for military service are in keeping with the Federal policy of building highly trained, specialized mobile units in preparation for modern warfare. This means that the armed forces cannot depend upon misfits from civilian life, but need intelligent young men and must compete for them with civilian employers. Some think the armed service have gone overboard in pay and benefits, in competing for men in a civilian period of inflated wage and business opportunities—but if so, all the better for the recruits.
The armed services are no longer to be, and they are not, the refuge for misfits in peace time. When you look at a man in uniform now you will know that he is an expert, or becoming an expert, in his line. You will know that his pay and retirement prospects are better than those of most civilians. You will have as much reason to be proud of the peace-cent increase for each three years service), and a 50 per cent increase if he is a member of a flying crew. He gets his food, clothing, lodging, medical and dental care, and a thirty-day paid vacation annually.
In terms of what such pay really means, a private starts out at $3,448.42 a year. A master sergeant can figure his pay at $4,794.42 annually in his first three years. A master sergeant's retirement pay after twenty years service represents a life saving at 3 per cent of $42,900; retirement pay after thirty years service represents a saving of $74,252. Not many civilians can save that much money.
But even if a young man does not want to stay in service, there are opportunities not only to continue general education but to become specialists in a wide field of technical and professional skills for civilian employment. High school graduates and others who have uncertainty about their futures owe it to themselves to investigate what the military has to offer—whether or not they think there will be another war.
Avocado Growers To Meet Friday
The recent low temperatures and the conversion of avocado trees to hardier varieties will be among the subjects discussed by the avocado growers when they meet Friday evening March 19, at 7:30 at the Farm Bureau in Orange. A discussion of budding and grafting, especially of top working of avocado trees and improving them in variety, will be presented by Walter Beck of La Habra, who will bring demonstration materials.

A new recruiting bulletin is reealing. A master sergeant, for example, is paid $165 a month up to three years of service, and if he should stay in over thirty years he would receive $247.50. But he would retire after twenty years with a life income of $107.25 monthly, or after thirty years with an income of $185.63 monthly. He would also draw a 20 per cent increase in pay for overseas service (in addition to the 5 per cent increase on the trees to hardier varieties will be among the subjects discussed by the avocado growers when they meet Friday evening March 19, at 7:30 at the Farm Bureau in Orange. A colored moving picture of "The Life-Cycle of a Silk-Worm" made by Harold Warner with microscopic lens and with miraculous patience, will be shown.
Another feature appealing to the ladies will be a demonstration by Marian Prentiss, home demonstration agent, showing the uses of avocados.

WHEN LIVING COSTS WENT SKY-HIGH... GAS STAYED DOWN!
The ups and downs of high food prices have stolen the newspaper headlines — but here's a cost of living item you may have overlooked: the Gas you use to cook your family meals has not increased in cost since 1939!
The fact is — the price of gas is even lower than it was back in '39. And by comparison, the higher other living costs have gone, the greater "bargain" gas has become.
We don't mean to claim all the credit, either — even though so far, the line has been held. It has taken a lot of "know how" and kept us on our toes.
There have been other factors, too. The greatly increased use of gas per household is one. Southern California's growth is another. But where these conditions have helped us by adding to our revenue, they have also added heavily to our operating costs. They have helped us to offset steadily climbing expenses—for payrolls, taxes, materials and even the cost of gas in the field. But the cost of extending our service to take care of new customers is running from 2½ to 3 times higher than it was in 1939.
As it probably is in your own household — keeping on the right side of the ledger has been a problem. Among our responsibilities has been the provision of an additional

cost of extending our service to take care of new customers is running from 2½ to 3 times higher than it was in 1939.
As it probably is in your own household—keeping on the right side of the ledger has been a problem. Among our responsibilities has been the provision of an additional supply of low-cost gas for this enormously growing area. The nearest practical source was some 1,200 miles away. To make it available, we participated in one of the biggest natural gas projects on record. The mammoth $70,000,000 Texas-California pipeline was constructed, and on November 13 was put in operation.
Dependable, low-cost service is just one of the reasons why virtually everyone in Southern California can use gas—for cooking, water heating, house heating, refrigeration.
