By C. E. HOLCOMB
There is a very interesting story in connection with the struggle made by the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific rail roads in searing land bonuses and floating funds to secure funds for constructing and operating rail transportation to and from San Francisco, in particular, and all the west coast in general from the east. This was virgin territory and its wonderful possibilities were visioned by far seeing men of the east as well as in the west that it remained for Messrs. Standard, Huntington, Crocker and Bolton to eventually put the project through. All told they had resources amounting to about $150,-100.00. A small amount for such a great project but in addition they had vision, ability and determination to succeed and, though their ethics might be questioned, they were eventually successful in this great undertaking.
After reaching San Francisco, land towns in adjoining counties wanting rail connections, voted lands and with U. S. Government grants, a branch was started both and eventually reached Los Angeles.
After the failure of the Atlantic and Pacific railroad to secure lands and cooperation, in San Francisco, which was followed by the panic of 1873, the Southern Pacific temporarily abandoned the route to "Fort Mojave" and concentrated its means on a road touma to prevent the entrance into which a valuable land grant was attached. These 2 companies constructed jointly, from the main line of the Santa Fe at Albuquerque to the Colorado river at Needles, (1879-1883) and intended to carry their road from there to Los Angeles and San Francisco, but at this juncture the Southern Pacific again barred the way.
The California Southern R. R. was chartered October 12, 1880 to construct a line from San Diego to San Bernardino. Soon afterward, the S. P. through the purchase of stock, obtained a share in the management and secured the extension of the Atlantic and Pacific to the Colorado at Needles which compelled it to connect there with the former. This was nearly a death blow to the California Southern, which had suffered much from floods in the Temecula canyon, and rendered impassable about 30 miles of its tracks, carrying bridges and ties entirely away, some being seen 100 miles at sea. It must not only rebuild this 30 miles washed away, but must construct 300 miles of new road over mountain and desert instead of 80 miles as first intended.
The directors hesitated for several months, but finally the S.P. determined to sell to the California Southern, the road from Needles to Mojave, which had been built by the Pacific Improvement Co., successor of the Western Development Company. This transfer took place in October, 1884, and the California Southern at once began construction and repairs and in 1885, opened the line from San Diego to Barstow. In October, 1886, it passed into the control of the Santa Fe.
Bancroft says, "Thus after 10 years of struggle two of the Eastern railroads effected entrance into which a valuable land grant was attached. These 2 companies constructed jointly, from the main line of the Santa Fe at Albuquerque to the Colorado river at Needles, (1879-1883) and intended to carry their road from there to Los Angeles and San Francisco, but at this juncture the Southern Pacific again barred the way.

After the failure of the Atlantic and Pacific railroad to secure lands and cooperation in San Francisco, which was followed by the panic of 1873, the Southern Pacific temporarily abandoned the route to "Fort Mojave" and concentrated its means on a road to Santa Ana to prevent the entrance into California of the Texas and Pacific which had gone so far as it have graded ten miles of road out of San Diego and to have shipped iron, ties and timber for this section of their road and asked Congress for a subsidy in addition to its land grant.
From this period for years the central Pacific, through its indeterminate vice-president, who was also president of the Southern Pacific fought the T & P, represented by Thomas A. Scott, before railroad committees of both branches of the legislature. After defeating the efforts of Scott and the T & P, later in December 1881 the S.P. met the Texas Pacific at Terra Blanca, near El Paso and opened its line to New Orleans in 1883 through connection with the Texas and New Orleans railroad at Houston, Texas.
The Atlantic and Pacific suffered in common with other financial enterprises in 1873 and later entered into a combination with the A. T. & S. F. and the St. Louis and San Francisco R. R. companies, which gave the Santa Fe a half interest in the charter of the Atlantic and Pacific (which was owned by St. Louis capitalists)
Needles to Mojave, which had been built by the Pacific Improvement Co., successor of the Western Development Company. This transfer took place in October, 1884, and the California Southern at once began construction and repairs and in 1885, opened the line from San Diego to Barstow. In October, 1886, it passed into the control of the Santa Fe.
Bancroft says, "Thus after 10 years of struggle two of the Eastern railroads effected entrance into California." In April, 1887, the tracks of two other railroads, namely the Los Angeles and San Bernardino and the San Gabriel Valley railroads were joined forming a line from Los Angeles to San Bernardino, taking the name California Central Railway. It was in reality a consolidation of the Santa Fe and the Atlantic and Pacific. I think that there are some benches in the Santa Fe waiting rooms which still bear the California Central R. R. brand.
The completion of the California Central and its close relation to the Santa Fe, started the rate war between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific for eastern passenger traffic and brought about the "Great Boom" of the "eighties" in southern California and started the development of a great horticultural and agricultural empire.
