Blodgett 609 First Nafi, Bank Bldg. Santa Ana, California A marriage license was obtained by Boyd E. Whitney of Santa Ana and Lorraine H. Boettger of Anaheim, at the county court house in Santa Ana last week. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Boteler of 7291 West Ninth street, Buena Park, became the parents of a baby daughter Wednesday of last week at the Fullerton Cottage hospital. The tiny miss tipped the scales at eight pounds and five ounces. Flu Loses Its Grip on Southern End of State Influenza relaxed its grip on southern counties during the week ending January 31, but the disease spread northward, 2,041 cases being reported throughout the state, topped by 1,038 in San Mateo county, according to the State Department of Health. Total number of communicable disease cases reported for the week was 4,480; a large increase over the preceding week. Chickenpox, measles, mumps and whooping cough showed a decline. Reported by Orange county were: Chickenpox, 69; all measles, 3; mumps, 5; influenza, 37. Gauer Attacked, Defended at Meet Continued from Page 1 Gauer failed to build a strong organization and that he permitted parent to entertain doubts of a teacher's integrity. A reply was made by Gauer to the charges. As for his administration, he said he was willing his record should speak for itself. To the charge that he had cooperated with school personnel, he read a letter from the Aheim Elementary School teachers club thanking him for cooperation in handling their contracts. As for the missing pencil sharpeners, he said pencil sharpeners were in the supply room at the roadway school and available to the teacher merely by filling out requisition slip. The answered a complaint about making fountains at the Broadway school by saying the building old—built in 1901—and some equipment was wearing out that new drinking fountains were on order. He added that the fire school plant with its 1700 units and 62 teachers who use it instantly is bound to show wear that he is doing his best to do it up, adding that he is not illible. During the proceedings Trustee Robert Stabbert read a communion sent by Gauer's attorney, Bob Anderson Kaufman, to Roehm, warning that any derogous or libelous statements made by petition circulators would be acted upon. Gauer denied combee suggestions that this was a hat by saying he had no animity towards those passing the actions and that he respected her rights to petition, but he added that he also had rights to Fight Brewing In Congress On Margarine Tax All signs point to another battle by the margarine industry to repeal the federal laws taxing the manufacture and sale of its product. The federal government has taxed and regulated the sale of margarine since 1886. At present the manufacturer must pay an annual license fee of $600; a wholesaler handling yellow margarine pays an annual fee of $480 and a wholesaler handling uncolored margarine, $200; a retailer handling colored margarine is taxed $48 a year, and uncolored, $6. Then on each pound of yellow margarine the government levies a tax of 10 cents and on each pound of uncolored, a tax of a quarter of a cent. If the materials from which the margarine is made happens to tint the product yellow to a noticeable degree it must be bleached or pay the 10 cents a pound tax. The manufacturers seem most irked by the regulations which practically compel them to sell their product without a tinge of yellow and by a further provision of the law that it must be branded "oleomargarine." The original product was made largely from beef fat or "oleo oil." The modern product is a highly refined combination of vegetable oils, pasteurized and cultured skim milk, salt, vitamin A, with some lesser ingredients. Over 90 percent of the product is made of cottonseed and soybean oil. Yet it still must be branded "oleomargarine." The margarine manufacturers also point out what they regard as another discrimination against them. While the tax on coloring their product yellow, there is no law prohibiting the artificial coloring of butter and the fact that it is colored need not be stated on the label, but if a private hospital, restaurant, hotel and others which buy and color margarine must pay the manufacturer's tax of $600, plus the 10 cents per pound tax. All of which, they assert, increases the cost of living exactly in the income brackets where it hurts worst. 7th Infantry Open For Enlistments It was announced today by M/Sgt. H. E. Loeffelhardt, commanding the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force recruiting station at 128 So. Los Angeles street, Anaheim, that the 7th Infantry Regimental Combat Team at Fort Benning, Georgia, is now open for nearly 5,000 enlistments . . . first come, first served. The 7th is open to everyone with the necessary qualifications for Army enlistment, but those men who served in units attached to the 3rd Infantry Division prior to their discharge need only state the name of the unit and pass a physical exam! No mental or aptitude tests and interviews . . just the physical and you are a member of the 7th Infantry Regimental Combat Team! All interested applicants may get further details from Sgt. Loeffelhardt at his office, or call Anaheim 3686. Merchantable timber now standing in Trinity county is approximately 12,000,000,000 board feet. During the proceedings Trustee Robert Stabbert read a communion sent by Gauer's attorney, Bobie Anderson Kaufman, to Roehm, warning that any dererous or libelous statements made by petition circulators would be instructed upon. Gauer denied commere suggestions that this was a hat by saying he had no animosity towards those passing the elections and that he respected her rights to petition, but he added that he also had rights to stand. No suggestion that an outside cert be designated by the county board of education to investigate the Anaheim schools board members expressed confidence in their own ability to reach last decision. Among the 40 who attended the meeting many spoke up stoutly defense of Gauer. One said he sorry he had attended and forced to witness such a display of pettiness. Although not trimmed with the usual ribbons and lace, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Padilla, Route 1, Box received a wonderful Valen-present which arrived Saturday at St. Joseph's hospital weighing eight pounds, 10½ ounces. Since their gift is a boy, these ribbons will be blue. Trinity county has 967 miles of roads with about 300 surfaced and paved. Come over on the Sunny Brook side!
