Watson veteran city official and legislator, today announced he would be a candidate to succeed himself in the legislative upper house at the June primary election. He became the first to announce officially for the top spot inange county's lineup of officials and will seek a full four-year term. Watson, who for 10 years an Assemblyman from the district of southern Orange county was elected Senator in 1946 to the unexpired term of Thomas (Tommy) Kuchel, now state controller. Organizations and individuals petitioned Watson to re-enlist his name in the political so with which he is so familiar a 12 years' service in the state le lature. Prior to that, he was Orange city councilman and STATE LEADS NATION IN BEAN PRODUCTION (Western News Service) Boston, home of the bean, is losing its fame to California which now leads the nation in production and consumption of all varieties. However, while Boston Yankees like white beans baked all day Saturday in the famous crock, Californians take them in chili, semi-Mexican style. This state produced a record crop last year from 323,000 acres, 33,600 acres being located in Orange county, which yielded 453,600 bags. In citing the huge harvest of beans of all varieties, the California Crop and Livestock Reporting Service said this state produces 26 percent of all beans grown in the United States, and leads the nation in production. The 1947 bean crop is estimated at 4,363,000 bags as compared to 3,587,000 in 1946. Growers will realize $57,565,000 from the 1947 crop as compared to $40,000,000 the year before. The eight southern counties, including Santa Barbara county, topped all other sections of the state with 1,456,500 bags. The San Joaquin Valley was close behind with 1,298,400 bags. Coastal counties produced 635,700 bags, and the Sacramento Valley, 972,400. Small white, pink and blackeye bean production increased during the year, as did large and baby limas. Baby limas continued to be the leading bean grown. Schools Ask For $122,000,000 In Aid From State (Western News Service) Swamped by applications from 181 impoverished school districts for allocations totaling $122,000,-000 to cover school projects costing $139,000,000, the state allocations board, with but $11,000,000 left of an appropriation of $20,-000,000, is engaged in weeding out least necessary projects and attempting to bring relief to schools most in distress. Applications for aid are based on January 1 enrollments, but school attendance is increasing steadily as newcomers continue to cross the state line with children of school age. It was learned at allocations board offices that many legislators favor an additional appropriation to finance most vitally needed projects, but requests for funds have so far exceeded initial expectations, more money than can be appropriated must be found if all school districts are to be satisfied and needed classrooms provided. PINK RIBBONS Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Strain, 530 East Second street, La Habra, became the parents of a baby girl, Saturday, at the Fullerton Cottage hospital. Senator Watson announces For-election State Senator Clyde A. Frank Munoz of Anaheim, second base, who was named on the all-southern California team last year, and Gene Menges, also of Anaheim, third base, who proved a power-house at the hot corner, have transferred to other schools, leaving two major spots to be filled. Other players from this vicinity expected to see lots of action include Dave Hernandez of Anaheim, left field, and Larry Rayburn, Buena Park, pitcher. $2,012,000 In Warren Budget For This County Governor Warren's 1948-49 state highway construction budget of $50,000,000 for actual construction, plus $33,146,662 for construction engineering, minor improvements, rights of way, preliminary engineering and design, provides a total of $2,012,000 for work in Orange county. Four projects are included. The four and the total cost as estimated by the Division of Highways are: Santa Ana canyon highway to the Peralta school, five miles, grade, pave and structures, $1,399,-000; Seal Beach to junction Route 43, 2.6 miles (portions) surface, $78,000 requested; junction route 43 to east limits of Newport Beach near Irvine street,.7 of a mile, widening, $108,00; Santa Ana river bridge and approaches, $427,000. Want Hunters To Know Game Birds From Songsters An educational campaign to familiarize sportsmen with the differences between game, non-game, and predatory birds, has been launched by the State Division of Fish and Game. The division has found that the commonest violation of laws protecting birds is the killing of marsh hawks in the belief they are predators. Though most farmers state that the marsh hawk, along with the barn owl, is a welcome visitor on any ranch. The division classifies California birds as follows: Game birds: Ducks, geese, coots, rails, doves, pigeons, cranes, shore birds, surf birds, plover, quail, grouse, pheasant, sage hens, wild turkeys, prairie chickens, partridges and swans, though open seasons normally are only prescribed on quail, ducks, geese, coots, doves, and band-tailed pigeons. Non-game birds common in California are meadowlarks, sparrows, woodpeckers, wrens, robins, swallows, bluebirds, yellow-billed magpies, mockingbirds, hawks (excepting Cooper, sharpskinned and duck hawks) owls (excepting horned owls), eagles, road runners and brown pelicans. Predatory birds to be taken at any time, and for which no license is required, are blue jay, English sparrow, great horned owl, sharp-skinned Cooper and duck hawk, house finch, crow, black-billed magpie, shrike, white pelican, and shag or cormorant. 3693 Seek Jobs At Santa Ana, 538 Are Placed (Western News Service) While 3693 applicants sought organizations and individuals petitioned Watson to re-enter game in the political scene which he is so familiar after years' service in the state legislature. Prior to that, he was an city councilman and had served as mayor of Orange for years. Watson is a rancher in the Villa district and a director of the Park Orchards Association. Seeking return to the state, Watson will offer again to people of the county the long tenure and legislative "knowledge" that have made him one of most powerful and influential men in Sacramento. He is a member of many important committees, is vice chairman of the fish and game committee, and has spent considerable time since the Legislature adjourned in attending interim meetings of this and other Senate committees.
