Engineers Tell Of Finances Of Phone Company (Western News Service) Bit by bit, engineers of the California Public Utilities commission are continuing their testimony regarding the financial affairs of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company, which seeks a $40,000,000 annual gross revenue increase. Virtually every phase of the utility's operations were scrutinized by the commission's staff and results were offered in evidence in the already voluminous record which is being assembled at public hearings before President R. R. Mittelstaedt and Commissioner Harold P. Huls. One of the highlights of the testimony was the disclosure by Marshall J. Kimball, senior utilities engineer of the commission that generally, the rates charged now and proposed by the P. T. & T. in California are higher than those charged by independent telephone companies in comparable California areas. Kimball additionally introduced exhibits designed to show that such independent companies were earning good returns on their investments under the present rate they charge customers. Lewis R. Knerr, another commission senior engineer, testified that the P. T. & T. company in 1946 netted a total of $3,743,000 on the directories it furnished sub-scribers, through advertising and sales revenue. This gain, it was implied, was to the advantage of the rate payer as it had a tendency to keep down exchange rate because of the additional earnings from the directories. Stewart Weber, another senior utilities engineer, testified that the company's general office salaries and expenses for the three months ended October 31, 1947. Two Arrested In County As Alien Smugglers Two northern Orange county men have been arrested by federal authorities on a charge of conspiracy to smuggle aliens into California from Mexico. The arrest of Max Sherwood of Fullerton, an airplane pilot, last week was followed early this week by the arrest of Joseph Basabe of Brea. Immigration officials said they had already rounded up 106 Mexicans can nationals in the Whittier area who had been flown into Orange county from points south of the border. It was alleged Sherwood piloted the plane which brought the alien into this county, but immigration officials would not discuss the part they suspected Basabe or playing in the alleged conspiracy. They asserted, however, that many of the aliens they had rounded up carried forged birth certificates and other credentials. FISH FEW AND FAR BETWEEN SAY ANGLERS Fishing at most favorite spots is slow according to reports received this week by Bob Williams. A few bass are being taken after deep trolling at Lake Henshaw San Diego county. A few crappie are being caught at Lake Havesu by Parker Dam and Lake Mead Boulder Dam. From Willow Beach to the Nelson and El Dorado area of the Colorado river, some big trout are being taken on egg clusters. Also not too productive is surf fishing in the upper Newport-Balboa waters, although some big spotfin croakers are being hooked. Jetty fishing via drop line proved successful, however, for one high school angler who caught 15 opal eye perch last weekend. LICENSE TO WED A marriage license was issued to Albert Alfred Carmelo of Anaheim and Rachel Torres of Fullerton, last Thursday, at the county court house in Santa Ana. Banker Tells Lions About State’s Growth (Continued from Page 1) has been the largest the world has ever seen. Since Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees to journey west to the land of Caanan there has been a constant treck of humanity in the same direction and they are piling up now on the shores of California, the speaker declared. Pritchard declared that it was up to each community and each individual in it to take hold of local problems, solve them locally, and the statewide problems would take care of themselves. To take care of the increased population he cited the large increase of 79 percent in industrial payrolls here in contrast to the national average of 21 percent. Another healthy sign of growth is the fact that manufacturing plants have moved here in the past two years and there are plans for many more in the immediate future, the speaker declared. Under the heading of what we need to do, Pritchard brought out the two main political ideologies in the world and labeled them 'co-operation' and 'coercion' instead of Democracy and Communism. He then developed this theme by bringing out that it is up to us individually to make 'co-operation' work so well that we will not need a coercive force to make this state and nation function for the benefit of the greatest number. Buyers Bid Up Larger Citrus Sizes (Continued from page 1) On the auctions early this week the trend was upward for 360s and larger. On Tuesday's auctions fancy 360s averaged $6.50 a box delivered compared to an average of $6.45 on the preceding Tuesday; 300s averaged $7.15 compared to an average of $6.85 a week earlier and 252s averaged $7.85 delivered, compared to an average of $7.45 on the preceding Tuesday. Smaller sizes tended lower than last week. And the prolonged drought has made smaller sizes abundant. There was in storage on January 25, 1934 cars of lemons of which 30.92 per cent were 300s and larger, 38.32 per cent were 360s, 25.58 per cent were 432s and 490s and 5.18 per cent were 588s and smaller. Compared to the 1934 cars in storage on January 25, last, there were 2150 cars in storage at the comparable date last year, 2234 in 1946 and 2160 in 1945. Storage increased 333 cars from the count January 11. The failure of lemons to grow, it was thought, would cause a sharp downward revision in the early estimate of 34,700 cars for the present year. Last Rites For Former Resident Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in Monrovia, for Mrs. Thelma Roenne Blanchar, a former resident of Anaheim and Buena Park, who died January 24, after a brief illness.
