Pacific College
Choir to Sing
Here February 7
Now on its 23rd annual tour,
the Pacific Lutheran college
"Choir of the West" will present
a sacred choral concert in Anaheim February 7, Saturday night,
at 8 o'clock in the local high school auditorium, under the baton of Prof. Gunnar J. Malmin, composer and music instructor.
Prof. Malmin will conduct his well known choir of 56 voices in a program which includes a cross section of sacred choral music of five countries.
The A Capella group from the Parkland, Washington, college is making a 17-day tour of 20 cities in Washington, Oregon and California, traveling in two chartered buses. Also accompanying the singers are Mrs. Rhoda Hokestad Young, choir manager and chaperon, and Miss Esther Ordal, nurse.
The program here will begin with "O Praise Ye God" by Tschaikowsky, impressive in its subdued beginning and brilliant climax. The choir will continue with J. S. Bach's arrangement of the sixteenth century chorale, "Jesu, Priceless Treasure." Next will be Mendelssohn's "Savior of Sinners," with a tenor solo by Charles Martin.
The first group of selections will conclude with the broad and deeply reverent, "Salvation Is Created" by the Russian mystic, Tschesnokoff.
The second group will feature colorful compositions from the sixteenth century, beginning with Leisring's "Let All the Nations," keynoted by antiphonal effects. Taken from Palestrina's great "Mass of the Pope Marcellus," the next selection will be "Et Incarnatus Est." The simple and lovely "Presentation of Christ in the Temple" by Eccard, who is frequently referred to as the German Palastrina, and the sparkling song, "Bells at Speyer" by Ludwig Senfl, a personal friend of Martin Luther, will follow. Concluding the second group will be the triumphant, "Alleluia We Sing with Joy" by Handel, written for double choir.
"Behold a Host," a beloved Norwegian folk hymn in the Grieg arrangement for tenor solo, accompanied by male voices, will open the Pacific Choir's final group of selections. Two recent compositions by Choir Director Prof. Malmin will be heard. The first is a dramatic interpretation of a Danish hymn, "A Sigh is Heard Through Every Land"; the second, a Christmas lullaby, with Lydia Roberts singing the soprano solo.
Climaxing the concert is the imposing Advent motet, "Lord Hosanna" by Gustave Schreck. "Nunc Dimittis" by Peter C. Lutken, late American composer and a former teacher of the director, will conclude the varied program.

Marywood Seniors To Stage 'Smilin Through' at AUHS
"Smilin' Through," comedy drama by Allan Langdon Martin, which brought national recognition to Jane Cowl as an actress, will be staged by the senior class of Marywood Catholic girls' school tomorrow evening, Friday, at 8:15 o'clock, in the Anaheim Union high school auditorium.
The plot of the play is based upon a tragedy of 50 years ago, when a rejected suitor accidentally shoots the woman he loves on her wedding night. In transition, the love story of a boy and girl of the two families is woven in which the spirit of the slain woman comes "Smilin' Through" to aid the young lovers.
Contrasting with the basic seriousness of the story thread, are sparkling comedy highlights portrayed in the scenes potent with suspense and humor of situation. Because the play combines all the romance and fantasy of the powerful love drama with all the glittering humor of a rollicking comedy piece, it is considered a challenge to an amateur cast, according to drama critics.
Playing the heavy character roles of "John Cartaret" and "Dr. Owen Harding," are Miss Marilyn Yorba of Anaheim and Miss Dolores Peltzer of Lancaster, respectively. Miss Patricia Coffin of Anaheim and Miss Janice Kraemer of Placentia portray the romantic leads of "Kathleen" and "Ken"; Miss Gloria Beninato of Anaheim is cast in the comedy role of "Willie." Miss Sue Crosby of Bel-Air, West Los Angeles, plays the role of "Moonyeen Claire," the woman who returned to aid the young lovers. Miss Lois Baert of Anaheim interprets the 2 o'clock program will feature June Swan Pearce, co-surgeon and collector of glass. Milton Spencer is the leader; Mrs. Gilbert Bottger, associate leader.

The meeting will be presided over by Mrs. H. A. Johnston, leader; assisted by Mrs. Juahita Rossi. Will be served during the continuing social period.
"Purely Personnal" is the subject to be discussed during two-minute group participation session of the Toastmaster session Wednesday, February 18, in club house. The three 10 minute speakers will be Mrs. H. P. T., discussing "Presidents in Revival Mrs. Harold Kahn present "Holidays and Superstitions," Mrs. Milton Spencer giving "endars." Holiday Stage To Remodel Tustin School Theater
Revamping a blue print of the Tustin high school auditorium, patio and front halls into an intimate summer theater for the forthcoming 10 weeks entertainment to be produced by Holiday Stage, stock company, are a corps of designers. The sketches will come to life before Monday night, June 28, when the premier play will be presented marking the theatrical group's second season in Orange county.
The sketches call for a cheerful and modern lobby of pastel toned walls, matting carpets, artistically arranged flowers and vines with a south sea flavor, and large-sized photographs of the company players.
The patio, where steaming coffee and other refreshments will be served during intermissions, will be transformed into a luxurious garden of flowering potted plants. Walter Walker, horticulturist of Laguna Beach has been commissioned by Holiday Stage to grow scores of plants to be in full blossom by the middle of June when they will be moved from his gardens to the theater.
Every special feature and plan is designed for the comfort and entertainment of theater goers, Holiday Stage spokesmen stated. All decorative features will be

Enjoying luncheon at the newly-revamped Elliott's cafe were Mary Anne Forrester, Hazel Enloe Marlene Cooper, Genevieve Bearce and Lucile Kageler.
Due to the success of the affair another luncheon is planned by the group, to be culminated February 4, 1949.
