Thursday, January 29, 1948 Social and Club Activities GRACE THOMPSON Phone 2206 FJC Groups Plan Benefit Affair Recently visiting Superior Judge Kenneth Morrison’s court in Santa Ana were students of the transcription and secretarial training classes of Fullerton Junior college. The field trip was arranged by Miss Mary Louise Lynott, instructor in the jaysee business department. Varied functions of the superior court were explained before the regular session by Judge Morrison. Two court reporters, L. W. Slaback and his son, brought their portfolios of testimony for the college group’s inspection. After court recessed, a model of the yacht constructed by the defense in the Overell case was displayed. A trip through the county jail and crime laboratory completed the tour. Those attending from this vicinity included Gerry and Mari Allec of Placentia, Ronald Brelje of Olive, Don Cram and Virginia Heinz of Anaheim, Doris Anglin and Lydia Shear of Buena Park and Roberta Shoemaker of La Habra. Horwitz, treasurer. Appointive officers announced by Mrs. Reed, are Eileen Peterson, warden; Launa Boon, conductress; Mable Prine, chaplain; Maude Adams, musician; Grace Schafer, right supporter to the vice-grand; Letha Weber, inside guardian; Mildred Brubaker, outside guardian; Gale Cleveland and Ira Brown, right and left altar supporters; Florine Blackman, flag bearer, and Charlotte Maxon, Mae Willis, Elsie Spaulding and Ora Johnson, banner bearers. Henry Mang, past grand pairedch, and Mrs. Taylor, the installing officer, were escorted to the platform. Visitors introduced were Mabel Hensley of Colorado Springs, and D. A. Davis of Wisconsin. Brief speeches were given by Charles Brandt, district deputy grand patriarch, and A. G. Hutchison, district deputy grand master. Beta Sigma Phi Visit Antique Shop A visit to Wayside Antique Shop on South Palm street opened the meeting for members of Beta Sigma Phi chapter last Monday evening. A very pleasant hour was spent viewing the many interesting items on display and hearing Bakersfield on March 13 and 14. During the social hour, delicate refreshments of pear juice salad and homemade hot roast were served to one guest, Jez Zullig of Xi Alpha chapter in Los Angeles, and the following members, Bessie Frey, Dorothea Schuheilah Hineman, Mildred Maundhan, Anna Claire Mauerhan, Josephine Chance, Dorothy Gerleck Helen Sharp, Louise Miller, Delph Hopkins, Alice Myers and Greta en Varner. The home of Helen Sharp at 45 South West street will be the scene of the next meeting on Friday 9 and will be a gala Valentine party. Ebell Club To Hear Economist Dr. Ray Untereiner, economist of California Institute of Technology ANAHEIM VOCALISM 'BARBER OF SEVILLA' Two Anaheim singers and one Santa Ana vocalist are cast in principles in the forthcoming presentation of “The Barber of Seville” to be sung in English by the Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera Association, February Thursday night at 8 o’clock, at the Anaheim Union high school auditorium. To be featured Rossini's ever-popular come on opera are Albert M. Cranston and Miss Edith Browne, both of the city, and John La Monica Santa Ana. Director of the comparable care of principals and chorus is Maxtro Mimi Campanella. Chorus director is Otto T. Hirschler. Camacho Vega is the musical director assisted by J. Mrs. Hamilton was presented the past noble grand's jewel by Edna Kruse during the annual affair. Elective officers seated with Mrs. Reed included Rhoda Sibley, vice-grand; Berthyle Reisinger, recording secretary; Elsie Borth, financial secretary, and Hannah Charles Brandt, district deputy grand patriarch, and A. G. Hutchison, district deputy grand master. Home of Mrs. Eloise Smith at 742 North Claudina street was the next stop for the group where a short business meeting was held. During the session, pictures of the Southern California Council breakfast held in Fullerton on January 18 were shown and orders taken from the members. Miss Browne who made her choice but with the opera company during the Traviata performances in Orange county, will be featured in the feminine comedy part "Berta," the maid. Two character parts to be superseded by John La Monica, are that of Giorello, a servant, and that of an officer. A versatile singer and actor Cranston has just completed a motion picture part with Southernland productions. Occidental studio producers of the Michael Shaw pictures. Hugh Reaumont, who plays the popular role of the tough "private eye," Shane, starring in the lead of the new production, as yet un-named, Cranston disclosed. When not on tour, Cranston instructs vocal students here. With a repertoire of more than 10 operas, he can sing, extemporaneously, as many as five bass roles in one opera. During the past several years Cranston has sung leading bass parts with the San Francisco Opera company of New York. Orange County Parent-Teachers Meet in Orange Anaheim Parent-Teachers Association delegates attended the first county-wide joint dinner meeting of P.-T.A. personnel, last night, Wednesday, in the American Legion Hall in Orange. "Tasks Common to the School and the P.-T.A." was the evening's topic. Presenting the program, following the dinner, was Mrs. Edward T. Walker, director of extension, California Congress of Parents and Teachers. A panel led by Stanley Warburton, superintendent of the Fullerton Union high school and Junior college, was held. Panel members included Mrs. Richard R. Roehm of Anaheim, recording secretary of the fourth district P.-T.A.; Mrs. Walker who is the third vice-president of the state P.-T.A. and director of extension; Mrs. L. E. Sutherland, fifth vice-president of the state P.-T.A. and director of education, Mrs. Gerald Spangler, president of the Newport Harbor Union high school P.-T.A., Harold Kibby, Orange Union high school principal; W. In California, the Anaheim vocalist has been associated with the Golden West and El Dorado opera companies. Miss Browne, who was enced enthusiastically for her poised and dramatic interpretation of the co-feminine lead in "La Traviata," has been applauded in professional appearances as a featured singer and dancer in Nevada, Los Angeles and Imperial Valley. She was heard over station KVOE, Santa Ana, in a 21-week engagement. Her program was entitled "Edith Browne Sings." In the spring of 1946, she won first prize in the Orange county annual musical arts contest. She sang as a guest in top night spots in New York previously. PLAUD 'LA TRAVIATA' CO-STARRING WITH BROWNE-L. A. GRAND OPERA CAST A convincing presentation was given by Francis Barnes in the baritone characterization of "Giogio Germont," Alfredo's father.
