Most Orchards Need Water Now
Continued from Page 1 depending on the depth or type of soil; walnuts will need a penetration of six to ten feet. Miscellaneous deciduous trees will need two or three feet of penetration.
There is no substitute for the soil auger or the shovel and trench to determine the actual moisture condition below the surface, said Wahlberg. Now is the time to assist the tree develop next year's crop.
Mercury Drops Below Danger Point in Groves
Continued from Page 1 mum temperatures were 32 degrees and higher.
While the cold was by many degrees the sharpest the county had experienced this year the damage apparently was not as severe if lemon and avocado groves as has been in several freezes within the past five to eight years. No where was there immediately apparent the damage done by the freeze of 1937.
No frost in recent years, however, came with so little preliminary warning. Monday was mild that many growers did not even tune in their radios for the nightly broadcast of the Fruits Frost Service. The same mild midday temperatures followed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Lemon Market On Mend, Navels Drop Further
(Continued from Page 1)
the market for California navels this week. Fancy fruit on the auctions Tuesday ranged downward from 39 to 76 cents a box from averages for similar sizes and grades a week earlier.
Because of adverse weather conditions the prorate for California oranges for the coming week was cut to 525 cars of southern California and 275 cars of central and northern California fruit.
Lemons last week averaged $4.62 a box f.o.b. for all sizes and grades on all markets. This was about 9 cents a box below the average for the preceding week and about in line with the average price for the corresponding week in three preceding years, though the volume was considerably below that for any of the three preceding years. Auction sales Monday averaged from 5 to 40 cents a box higher than the average for corresponding sizes on the preceding Monday.
Lemon storage was beginning to build up after reaching a low of 1435 cars on December 28. On January 11 it was up to 1601 cars, compared with 1435 cars at the corresponding time of year in 1947, 1355 in 1946, and 1568 cars in 1945.
In anticipation of / livelier demand prorate for this week was stepped up to 250 cars.

Association Handled Twice as Much Fruit Last Year As in '46
(Continued from page 1)
the packing house door. The association, he said, handled approximately twice the amount of fruit in 1947 that it handled in 1946, the average size was considerably better than in the preceding year, averaging 237.5 fruits per box compared to an average of 271 in 1946. Twenty-five per cent of the fruit was sold for juice or by-products and returned approximately $20 a ton, compared to a return of $64.51 in 1946.
Members were interested particularly in Hipes' report of costs of handling fruit from tree to eastern market. It indicated that the association had to receive last year $2.68.8 a packed box before there was a cent to credit to the account of the grower. Of this total freight, icing enroute, bunker charge, diversion and demurrage and the auction percentage amounted to $1.4522. The packing charge for the year averaged only 70.7 cents a box. Picking and hauling took another 28.04 cents, Exchange advertising, Exchange selling and district exchange selling added 11.72 cents and precooling at the plant cost 7.5 cents.
A new feature of the manager's report was a production and return record of each of the association's 177 members. This showed that one grower produced 777 field boxes of fruit on each of his five acres and received a return of $940.17 per acre. His average of $1.21 per field box was considerably behind the top figure of
