Now, it is poor criticism that the oranges which are shipped as fresh fruit be used in the production of by-product not competitive with fresh or be dumped and destroyed. "In conclusion, I wish to this impression. If we cannot ourselves of modern merchandising methods, thereby getting produce to the market at a mum of expense enabling consumer to buy reasonably in quantity, then we had turn the deal over to Florida Texas and put our own expire groves into something else. I sincerely hope that all persons will give these suggestive deep thought. Constructive cism by enough growers in right places may bring result a deeply gratifying nature. Citrus Growers To Canvass Reservations (Continued from Page 1) a week after the first ten days and a fast, experienced woman can make much more than there was one factor where Graham thought might account for the reluctance of unemployed Joaquin valley agricultural workers to come down into southern California citrus groves. Most the valley workers now unemployed, he said, have been working there as cotton pickers, and ton picking is a job at which whole family, including mama and all but the young children work. But it is no citrus tradition to enrol women and children in groves. It might be, Graham gested, that papa doesn't like idea of taking the job of porting his family wholly himself. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN to the creditors of and all persons having claims against the said decedent or said estate to file them with the necessary vouchers In the office of the Clerk of the Superior Court of Grower Says Too Many Packing Plants (Continued from Page I) consumer paid about as much for oranges as he did during the war years and the only inference that can be drawn is that the middlemen got theirs and the grower got left. Now, it is poor criticism that only criticizes and attempts to add nothing constructive as a remedy. Therefore I am making the following suggestions, that if carried out, will result in more money for the poor, long suffering grower: “1st. Get rid of at least 50 per cent of the packing houses now in existence and put the remaining ones on a full time program that will handle our fruit easily. ‘2nd. Establish in every large city our own distributor who will service the retailer in the same manner as Standard Oil, Union Oil and Coca Cola companies service their customers. We will set the price per dozen of oranges to the consumer, giving to the retailer a set price for his trouble in merchandising. The retailer will be protected against poor, inferior fruit and the price per dozen to the consumer will be set daily, in fact may be stamped on each individual orange. Near-by towns can be serviced in the same manner through the medium of trucks. Remember we have to compete with Florida and in Florida only 10 per cent of the growers belong to any co-operative. The balance sell their fruit to independent buyers of which there are approximately 550 licensed buyers. They come to your grove, buy and pick your fruit for cash, place it directly onto trucks and deliver it to the retailers without it ever seeing a packing house or having half a dozen dealers coming in between the grower and the consumer. Now this is what we have to compete with and there is no use hiding our heads in the sands and denying it. Our own exchange is spending millions of dollars advertising our product when these same millions put into a modern distributing system would benefit, not only the grower, but the consumer. ‘3rd. We cannot supply the by-product manufacturer with our small and cull oranges at a price which will not cover production ed, he said, have been wooed there as cotton pickers, and ton picking is a job at which whole family, including mama and all but the young children work. But it is not the citrus tradition to eat women and children in groves. It might be, Graham gested, that papa doesn’t like idea of taking the job off porting his family wholly himself. Just now the situation in O' county is not near the stage. About 100 lemon pies could be used in the county; the navel harvest has not yet gone in this county. To prevent possible, a crisis in the citrus groves Graham will face in a few days with representatives of the state employment service for the Navajo reservation Arizona and New Mexico to cover if the Navajos wish to oranges and lemons. While contending that there is no need of looking outside state for workers just now director of state employment quoted in the Sacramento district as saying it may be nectar later and if possible the impress workers should be from Mt He said the agreement of 1949 satisfactory to the U. S. State department but that the M government was “Quibbling added that he did not think Mexican government would up the agreement, once they are actually needed in country. ‘House of Magic’ To Be Presented Continued from Page I at the research laboratory are of interest to the layman included among the acts in postwar version of the show. One of the most interesting demonstrations is that fear of electric eye. With its electric lamp turned on striking a match. And an eye attached to a loudspeaker makes it possible to “hear” the changes in light being as changes in sound. In combination with a lamp, music is sent across room on a beam of light and at the opposite side of the room has been performed Schenectady for a distance more than 25 miles. Inquiry Ordered Into Wire Use By 'Bookies' (Western News Service) An investigation of the use of California's communications facilities by race-track "bookies" was under way this week on orders of the California Public Utilities Commission. In a swift move, following receipt of a letter from Governor Warren's special crime study commission on organized crime, the commission launched a formal investigation of the betting wires on its own motion, naming more than 25 California communications utilities, mainly telephone companies, as respondents. Simultaneously, Harold P. Huls, president of the commission, to whom the case was assigned for hearing, announced that he would try to set a date soon for the first public hearing on the probe. Included among those who will be formally notified of the hearings are the attorney-general of California; the special crime study commission on organized crime; each California sheriff and district attorney; the chief of police of each principal city in the state, and "such other parties as the commission may designate." Scope of the investigation was touched upon in one phase of the formal commission order which said that the investigation is being instituted for the purpose of determining: If the use being made of communications facilities or instrumentalities, in any instance, is in violation of law, or is aiding in violation of the law, and what action should be taken by the commission if it finds that there are such law violations. The governor's special committee had requested the commission to undertake the investigation, stating that "bookies" are using California telephones for illegal betting purposes while thousands of California's legitimate business men and citizens cannot obtain telephone service because of equipment shortage.
