"HANK" SAYS .. God and the soldier we adore In time of danger, not before: The danger past and all things righted, God is forgotten and the soldier slighted." This, one of Marlborough's veterans wrote over two hundred fifty years ago. Almost daily we find in the press of the nation, evidence to indicate that history repeats itself—that we are a people of short memory who wave the flag in time of danger but in the comfort and safety of our peace time existence are prone to repeat those famous words "it can't happen here." PFC. George Kipps, Route 2, Anaheim, recently spent a leave at home prior to his departure overseas for duty with the famous 24th Infantry Division, currently stationed in Japan. Kipps completed his basic training at Ford Ord, California, and was more than generous in his praise of the food at Ord and Army life in general. According to the service newspaper "Army Times" new blue uniforms may be ordered for personnel of the Air Force. Ranking officials of the Air Force recently approved the change from olive drab to the new color while a final decision on style and insignia is expected to be made shortly. After the style and insignia are country and only 24 have been guilty of misbehavior. Loren H. Crawford, 407 East Center St., Anaheim, Navy veteran of World War II signed up for three years in the U. S. Army. While in the Navy Crawford worked as a machinist and this speciality was easily converted into an Army specialty. Crawford chose to serve with the Army unassigned. Who was it said: Generals discuss things privately and privates discuss things generally? Two local youths who attended Anaheim High School together, last week enlisted in the U. S. Army. They will receive their basic training at Fort Ord, California. Looks like were going to have "Neon Suits" too! Frank P. Armenta, 17, son of Henry V. Armenta, Route 5, Anaheim, enlisted for two years and has reported to Ford Ord for his basic training with the U. S. Army. According to a release by the Swiss National Tourist Agency, U. S. Soldiers have done much to increase goodwill between Switzerland and the United States. The agency reported that 320,000 soldiers have visited their Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg on his return last week from a vacation trip to Chicago, Albuquerque, and El Paso. At El Paso United States and Mexican cattlemen and government veterinarians were conferring on more efficient control of the foot and mouth disease of cattle, which was reported to be within three hundred miles of the international border. Border cattlemen were apprehensive of the gradual movement of the disease northward. While in Chicago, the farm advisor visited the fruit auction where California citrus fruits, apples, pears and grapes were offered to the trade. Tulare county navel oranges were averaging $3.54 per box on the auction at that time. The sizes were highly satisfactory—126's, 150's, 176's—in contrast to the small Valencia sizes of the past season ranging from 220's to 344's. Retail prices in Chicago at the time ranged twice to three times the auction price. The annual meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation was in session last week. Mrs. Wahlberg attended the session of the Associated Farm Women and the farm advisor attended the ARTHRITIS This is perhaps the most widespread and the most painful and crippling disease known throughout the world today. Available in bleached as well as standard, deep-toned mahogany, it has the feeling of Sheraton or Hepplewhite brought up to date. The 36-inch diameter top is covered in a warm grey leather. It's spacious enough for tea service or, between times, as a setting for magazines, books and smoker’s accessories. Those enrolled in public junior college evening and part-time classes number 37,793, of which 6,239 are veterans. The survey was completed by the Bureau of Readjustment Education of the state department, which also found that educational institutions now approved for veteran education number 1,305, of which 677 are publically supported. In these institutions, which include all high and vocational schools, the enrollment October 1 was 287,287, of which 137,434 were identified as veterans. The survey also disclosed the most critical problem facing prospective veteran enrollee is that of housing. While 22,192 can still be enrolled, housing is available for only 3,612 more students. Marlin Shy In La Paz Waters Roy Mabee of Lincoln road, and his grandson, Tom Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Anderson of this city, were with a party of nine fishermen who traveled via air to La Paz, Mexico, December 27, equipped with heavy tackle designed for marlin. The Anaheim duo arrived here last Thursday. One marlin was nabbed by a gentleman from Washington state. Cabrillo, (bass, Mexican style), were plentiful, however. The enthusiasts, who stayed in the Peral hotel, trolled from a boat owned by their ariel skipper, Pilot Chet Brown of Ontario. The flying fish used for marlin bait became lonesome, it was reported. The party returned, en masse, via Brown's PB-Y, "Adventures, Inc." In Mexico during the aquatic expedition, the sun shone every day, Anderson stated. Communicable Diseases On Decline in State LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Editor Anaheim Gazette Sir: An item in your paper appearing December 25, 1947 captioned "State Team to Teach Mosquito Control Here" has recently been called to our attention. We have noted that the last sentence of this item states that the City of Anaheim was included in the Orange County Mosquito Abatement District. Unfortunately, at the time this District was organized in July of 1947, the Anaheim City Council rejected a resolution to be included in the new district. If at any time, the City of Anaheim wishes to become part of the Mosquito Abatement District, the State Mosquito Abatement District's Act provides a procedure for annexation. This procedure may be found in the Health and Safety Code of the State of California, Division 3, Chapter 5, Article 6. For your information, you will be interested to know that the Orange County Mosquito Abatement District includes the entire County of Orange except for the cities of Anaheim and Fullerton. We will be glad to furnish you at any time, further information concerning annexation procedures or on the activities of our district. Very truly yours, E. E. FRISBY, President Board of Trustees (To the Gazette's nodding Mosquito Abatement editor, a thump on the noggin.—Ed.) Needed for constructing the flying circle are a bull dozer, some watering and rolling equipment. Anyone able to operate this machinery or able to obtain such equipment is urged to call Williams; Anaheim 4806, club spokesmen stated. Attending the session in addition to leader Bob Keech were the adult advisors, Joe Kitchens and Glen Sharpe. At the next regular session, January 23, same time and place, Keech, who held the world's speed record for model planes recently, will explain model building and operating, it was announced. All members and youngsters from six to 60 interested in model flying, are invited to attend the session. Last Sunday Pop Arnold flew successfully a model for 100 flights on the 70-foot circle at the Fullerton airport. It seems Lee Wright was not so lucky. He spent most of the day encouraging his model's motor to run. When it did turn over his brother, Tom, took over the control lines and Lee just had the pleasure of a few second actual flying time. Driver Course Is Compulsory If Offered By School (Western News Service) If a school district maintains a course in auto driver education or driver training, all students enrolled in the school must take the course, Attorney General Fred N. Howser ruled today in an opinion handed down at the request of the Communicable Diseases On Decline in State (Western News Service) Communicable diseases tapered off during October, with venereal diseases still leading the list, according to the state department of health. The department listed 3,179 cases of gonococcus infection, and 2,088 of syphilis for the month, a decrease, however, over totals for October, 1946. In child diseases, mumps topped the list with 796, and chickenpox was second with 730 cases. There were 730 cases of tuberculosis, 431 of measles, 209 of German measles, 331 of scarlet fever, and 548 of whooping cough. No cases of smallpox were recorded in October, and only two during the first ten months of this year. The department also called attention to the increase in the span of human life, which is now 68.5 years as compared to 18 years in the early iron and bronze age. The early estimates have been determined from anthropological research, the department says. The average length of life, it is believed, has increased more in the last century than in all other centuries put together. The department has announced that practically all full-time health departments, including Orange county, qualified for financial aid under the public health assistance act by the end of November. New Red Tags Showing Up Here on Autos The 1948 silver and red California license tabs are showing up around town in increasing numbers. Those who haven't obtained them yet from 405 South Main, Orange, have until the close of business February 4 to obtain their tabs without penalty. Department of Motor Vehicles officials urge them to apply as soon as possible to avoid the last minute rush. There is no waiting for tabs this year. All a private passenger car owner need do is present his 1947 white registration slip, bearing a correct mailing address, pay the increased 1948 fee. His registration card will be mailed to him. If renewal by mail is preferred, the private passenger car owner should mail his 1947 white registration card to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Sacramento, together with the correct 1948 fee. Personal checks or currency are not acceptable on mail applications. To obtain the correct 1948 fee, look at the fee listed in the lower left corner of your 1947 registration certificate, add $3 and round off the amount to the nearest dollar. The minimum fee is $7. Truck, trailer and motorcycle owners have been advised by mail of their correct fees. They should present the fee notices, pay the amount listed and receive their tabs and validated registration card immediately. They also have the option of sending the notice and fee by mail to the department in Sacramento. Howser ruled today in an opinion handed down at the request of the state superintendent of public instruction. The superintendent asked whether the State Board of Education might exempt certain students from taking the course and if a school district could, after either one or two courses had been established, discontinue one or both. Howser ruled the state board may not exempt any student, but a school district was within its rights in discontinuing either or both courses should the district desire. Notice of fees due they should present their 1947 white registration card and have their fees computed. Nicholas Martinez Funeral Wednesday Funeral services for Nicholas Martinez, who passed away at the family home on East Canina street, Atwood, last Saturday afternoon after a brief illness, were conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the chapel of Hilgenfeld mortuary. A service was also held Tuesday evening at 7:30 at the chapel. Born in Mexico 44 years ago, he had been a resident of the United States for 36 years and of California for 27 years. Surviving are his wife, Sophia Martinez, and other relatives. Phone Company Asks for Fourth Rate Increase A request for $8,800,000 more than previously sought as an increase in intrastate rates is on file in San Francisco with the California Public Utilities commission by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company. Latest petition brought the company's total request for advances to $38,000,000. So far, the commission has issued three interim rate orders while continuing public hearings. These orders have granted the company—on an interim, emergency basis—an increase of $22,-500,000 annually in its gross intrastate revenues in California. If the commission granted the recent request, it would be necessary to add about $17,000,000 to the revenues permitted by the interim orders. The company indicated that the latest addition to its income might be obtained by adding 50 cents per month on all California business phones; 25 cents per month on residence phones; 25 cents per month on extensions, and an increase of $1 in connection charges for business phones and PBX boards. It was indicated that granting of the new request, and adding it to what the company has already received on an interim basis, would bring the utility's rate of return to about 7 percent. Witnesses for more than 30 California cities and the U.S. government have testified that they believed between 5 and 5.5 per cent net return is ample. The public hearings in the case resume again January 12 at Los Angeles before commission members. C. A. Barnhill Rites Held Today Funeral rites for C. A. Barnhill, who passed away at the home at 732 North Olive street on Tuesday, are being held today (Thursday) from the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary with the Rev. W. M. Waer, pastor of the Church of the Lord, Placentia, of which the deceased was a member, officiating. Born in Jewel City, Kansas, 63 years ago, he had lived in Anaheim for the past 32 years. Surviving are his wife, Laura A. Barnhill of the home; four brothers and one sister. Interment was in Anaheim cemetery. Anaheim Gazette since 1870. YOU NEED New Rings Ford V-8 Car Owners!
