Chest Still Has $7610 to Raise To Reach Goal Contributions and pledges to Anaheim's 1947 Community Chest at midweek stood at $7610.47 short of its goal of $26,300 but teams of service club members still were scouring places of business and residential areas with determination not to stop until the goal is reached. "We can pass our objective easily," said Director E. J. Power, "if contributors will only remember that we are financing this year seven social agencies and will give only a dollar towards the support of each agency." If you own a business in Anaheim you can't afford not to advertise in the Gazette Master Printers Hold Annual Christmas Party More than sixty members and their wives assembled at the Santa Ana Community Center Lounge last Monday evening when the Master Printers of Orange County observed their second annual Christmas party and dinner. An unusually large Christmas tree, beautifully decorated, was the center of the decorative theme and was placed beside the large fireplace in the lounge. The tables were decorated with lighted tapers in red and green with bouquets and spot-decorations of clusters of pyracantha at intervals along the several tables. A delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served by Raul's Patio and Greenhouse Restaurant, Santa Ana. Larry Turner of the Mission Press in Fullerton was master of ceremonies for the program and Liquor License Fees Sharply Down in 1947 Alcoholic beverage license fees returned a total of $83,276,070.81 since 1933 as a result of $219,800.48 collected during October, the State Board of Equalization announced. The board said that fees collected during the first ten months of this year totaled $5,127,324.16 against $9,143,684.04 the 12 months of 1946. A total of 2,145 liquor licenses of all kinds were issued during October and 55,719 up to that period for the fiscal year 1947-48. The distilled spirits excise tax for September netted the state $1,022,671.63 as opposed to $1,654,189.91 in September, 1946, a decrease of $631,468. The beer and wine excise tax brought the state $336,278.34 as opposed to $328,614.95 in September of last year, a gain of $7,663.39. Beer sales in California during September totaled 15,378,618.88 gallons with 794.963.79 gallons exported. Still dry wine sales totaled 344,501.78 gallons; other still wines, 1,007,658.93 gallons; and sparkling wines, 257,680 half pints. The board announced that during October 40 licenses were denied; 16 suspended; and 1 revoked in the Los Angeles area. Mr. Shearer is owner of the Garden Grove News. As each of the guests introduced themselves and their wives, the ladies were presented with a box of candy. I hope it wasn't your National Service Life Insurance. But if it was, it's not too late to re-instate it—without a medical examination. But you'll have to act fast! December 31, of this year, is the deadline! Contact your nearest Veteran's Administration Office or consult any Veteran's Information Center or Veteran's Service Center. Bert E. Simms, 118 S. Philadelphia street, Anaheim, stopped by the office the other day and advised us that he had enlisted in the ERC and is being called to active duty for a six months to one year period. This active duty is in the return of the World War II dead program and reservists chosen for this duty are to accompany the bodies and act as military escorts for those of the honored dead whose final resting place will be on their native soil. Simms plans on reenlisting in the regular U.S. Air Force upon completion of this duty. The customs and traditions of the service have made a lasting impression upon every man who has been a soldier. To talk with a man long after he has been discharged will revealed that he can still "snap to" with a salute when the flag goes by, can still do the Manual of Arms and whistle the bugle calls. For the dignity and honor of the profession carry memories that make true the old adage "Old Soldiers Never Die." While we're writing of War Dead, customs and traditions. Margaret Gilmore Called By Death Mrs. Margaret Gilmore, 68 years old, passed away at Fullerton General hospital on Wednesday, December 10. While we're writing of War Dead, customs and traditions, bugle calls, etc., perhaps some of our readers would like the words to the familiar "Taps," the soldier's last honors. Here they are: I Fades the light And afar Goeth day Cometh night And a star Leadeth all Speedeth all To their rest. II When your last Day is past From afar Some bright star O'er your grave Watch will keep While you sleep With the brave. Recruiters were tough back in the sixties, says George Laramee of Victoria, B. C., the only living Canadian to have served in the American Civil War. Now 110 years of age (See! I told you Old Soldiers Never Die.), Mr. Laramee recalls: "A Yankee slipped me a Mickey Finn, and when I sobered up I was a scout for the 13th Wisconsin Make your car STAY NEW LONGER Mr. and Mrs. Raymond M. Have you ex-G.I.'s heard anything about the Army and Air Forces plan to integrate 5000 new Warrant Officer appointments into the regular Army and Air Forces during the summer of 1948? The program is much too big to go into detail in this column but examinations will be held shortly after the first of the year. Anyone interested in this program can get full details by coming around to the office here at 128 S. Los Angeles street, or by calling me at Anaheim 3686.
