'Aggie' Tops All-Time Record in His Specialty of Kicking Field Goals
By kicking his 14th and 15th field goals for the Los Angeles Dons pro-football team Sunday, Ben Agajanian of Anaheim hung up an all-time professional football record, and by converting four touchdowns in the same game against the Chicago Rockets he tied another world's record.
His two field goals broke the record of 13 in one season, set last year by Lou Groza of the Cleveland Browns, and the 10 points scored by "Aggie" Sunday enabled him to tie Groza's record of 84 points from placement in a season.
In announcing that "Toeless Ben" had reached the pinnacle of his profession, Frank Finch, sports writer for the Los Angeles Times gives a little of the football specialist's history.
"Born at Santa Ana, Ben played a little football at Compton college," writes Finch, "but he was lured to New Mexico U. on the strength of his prowess as a tennis player."
Ted Shipkey, now Benny's boss along with Co-coach Mel Hein, was N.M.U.'s headman when Agajanian went out for the varsity in 1940. During that season Ben booted several field goals and handled all the Loboes' extra-point work.
"Early in the spring of '41 Ben lost his toes, (in an elevator accident) but not his spirit. When his foot had healed sufficiently for him to bear the sting of salt, he soaked it in brine for hours upon hours to touchen the tender skin.
"Meanwhile, Shipkey ordered a special tailor-made shoe for Aggie. Once he got the feel of the blunt-nosed boot Ben found that he was kicking with greater accuracy than ever! He kicked six three-pointers in '41 for the Lobees.
"His college career at an end, Ben knocked around pro football with little success until he joined the Hollywood Bears last season. He banged 11 goals through the uprights, not to mention a mess of extra points, and the big league..."
