Bonanova Concert To Be in AUHS November 22 Fortunio Bonanova, concert, opera, stage and screen star, will be presented by Mary Bran of Los Angeles, in concert in the Anaheim Union high school auditorium Saturday, November 22, at 8:30 o'clock that evening. The unique feature of the program will be his appearance in conjunction with an all-color motion picture in sound of himself as soloist with full symphony orchestra in the Pan-American Bowl in Mexico City. He recently played the role of "father" in MGM's technicolor picture, "Fiesta." A talented composer, Bonanova introduces works of North American musicians to Latin American audiences, and in the same vein, brings South American tempos and interpretations to the United States. Anaheim Altrusa Club Charter At Banquet In an impressive ceremony women's service club, received its national, Monday evening during Fremont Junior high school cafe Ninth District governor of Altrusa Mrs. Hildred Ferrell, Anaheim civic club, church and school heads and delegates attended the event. Addressing the assembly, Dr. Preston stated, "Membership in Altrusa means being organized as a unit rather than a group of individual career women working without a specific plan. Altrusa membership will carry with it many advantages and obligations, but as with any enterprise, the risks and responsibilities are made worth while by gains and satisfactions achieved." “Membership in Altrusa constitutes a challenge to make the club felt in community affairs as a service organization of women well informed as to public opinion, good government and service to others,” she continued. Dr. Preston concluded by commenting, “It is with full confidence that the Altrusa club of Anaheim will meet its challenges as a civic club, that I take pleasure in presenting this charter.” Program speaker was Gertrude Bruns, staff member of Girl Scout national headquarters in New York City, who was assigned to the American occupation zone in Germany during 1947. She returned to the United States only a short time ago. Mrs. Bruns presented a vivid picture of conditions in civilian Germany. When in that country she dealt mainly with displaced persons. FORTUNIO BONANOVA Born in the Isle of Mallorca, Spain, Bonanova is now a citizen of this country. His career began when he became the protege of the Chaliapin of the Royal Chapel of King Alphonso, where he sang as a youth. He made his debut in grand opera in Spain two years later and was hailed as a great lyric baritone, according to Miss Bran. Included on his program here will be "Granadinas" by Barrera, "Maria De La O" by Quiroga and the folk song "Asturiana" by the late de Falla. A vital personality, Bonanova enjoys opera, stage and screen roles but prefers the concert stage more where he can be "just himself." In addition to his portrayal of "Antonio Morales" in "Fiesta," he played a leading role in Universal's "Ali Baba"; the part of "Columbus" in Twenty-Century Fox's "Where Do We Go From Here?", and the Italian General part in "Five Graves to Cairo." On Broadway, as a dramatic actor, he was Catherine Cornell's leading man in the thirteen-month New York run of "Dishonored Lady." Tickets may be obtained from the Baton Music company, 157 West Center street, or at the high school box office. ANAHEIM GAZETTE Im Altrusa Club Receives Roll At Banquet Monday Night An impressive ceremony, the Anaheim Altrusa, service club, received its charter from Altrusa Interday evening during a special dinner meeting at senior high school cafeteria. Dr. Helen Preston, district governor of Altrusa, presented the charter to Ed Ferrell, Anaheim president. More than 100 church and school delegates attended the secretary to Dr. Preston; presidents and representatives of southern California Altrusa clubs including Mrs. Irene Daniger, president of the Santa Ana club, which sponsored the local group; church representatives; service club presidents and their wives, of this city. The affair began with the opening Altrusa ritual and closed with George Washington's prayer, which bears out the theme of Altrusa, "Live and Let Live." Mrs. Daniger was the reader. Artistic decorations of blue and white, Altrusa colors, were arranged by Carmen Lizarraga, Anaheim member. Huge bouquets of white chrysanthemums graced the long banquet tables. Clad in formal gowns, all Altrusa members had corsages of white carnations blended with blue ribbons. Blue candles on the tables were held in metallic papered holders. Anaheim Altrusans identified themselves as to occupation during the dinner hour. Recorded background music was Untrained Boys With 22 Rifles Worry Police There are too many boys in Anaheim whose parents provide them with rifles and neglect to school them in the use of the weapons, in the opinion of Anaheim police officers. A small boy with a rifle and no training in the proper use of a gun is not only a menace to himself, but to a large part of the community, they say. Complaints from residents near the city limits that boys are shooting indiscriminately in their vicinity are growing in number, say the officers. There were three from widely separated points on Tuesday. One was from Vermont and East street where boys were said to be using a .22 rifle carelessly. Shortly afterward an officer took a .22 rifle from a 13 year old boy who was shooting haphazardly in a grove on North West street. And during the day a man living on South Dickel street told of having electric lights on his garage and a number of decorative gourds at his home shot at by a boy, with an air rifle. “If parents won't take the time to train their boys how to use rifles,” said one officer, “there are two good rifle clubs in the city that will gladly undertake their training, if given the opportunity.” Former Principal Dies Saturday Charles E.
