University Dean To Speak Before County Groups
Dr. Ernest O. Melby, dean of the School of Education, New York University, will speak before two education groups in Anaheim and Fullerton Wednesday of next week.
At 12 o'clock he will be featured at a joint administrative meeting at Orange Gardens, Anaheim, to which all administrative and supervisory personnel and their guests are invited. His topic will be "New Concepts of Educational Leadership."
Dean Melby will address a general gathering in the Fullerton Junior college lounge at 3:45 o'clock that afternoon. His subject will be "Education Can Save Freedom."
A well known figure in the field of education, Dr. Melby is the author and co-author of many books dealing with educational problems and possibilities.
Before becoming associated with New York University, he was dean of the School of Education at Northwestern University, and president of Mountain State University.
Dean Melby has served in many professional capacities including that of secretary to the American George Hjelte, general manager of Los Angeles city recreation, will give the address, "Youth Conservation." He will be presented to the delegates by Mrs. Arthur Sipherd, chairman of youth conservation.
"Cooperation with War Veterans" will be the topic to be discussed by Mrs. Augustus Dunaway, state chairman of War Veterans Service, and to be presented by Mrs. V. P. Runnels, county chairman of War Veterans Service.
Following luncheon in the Women's Civic Club, 10681 Garden Grove boulevard, board members will attend the afternoon session, also held at the Methodist church.
Vocal selections by Miss Vera Jean Hilbers of Anaheim, will highlight the entertainment program. The soprano will be introduced by Mrs. J. J. Alexander, county chairman of music.
"Senior Aid to Juniors" will be the speech topic of Mrs. Kenneth H. Rogers, state Junior advisor, to be presented by Mrs. LeRoy Burns, county advisor of Juniors.
Junior board members will be special guests at the federation meeting, it was announced. An exhibit of rugs, arranged by Mrs. George Telford, chairman of crafts, will be on display.
Cranston Pupils To Give Concert
Miss McDonough, known professionally as Betty Baker of Universal Pictures, Hollywood, is the part of "Dona Anna" in "Giovanni" by Mozart, presentation of the American Opera Company of Los Angeles, Tuesday last week. This lyric soprano one of the leading singers of company, Cranston stated. Included on her Sunday repertoire be the aria "Tell Me Not," English, from "Don Giovanni" "Le Mirroir" by Ferrari, in French and "Hymne Au Soleil," from the original French manuscript by Georges.
Dunn, known professionally Wayne Towers, is also a member of the American Opera Company. The baritone soloist sang the part of "Frank" in "Rosalinda" Friday of last week in Los Angeles. She will interpret Edwina "Into the Night," "Evening Star" from Wagner's "Tannhauser," German, and "Eritu" from "Masked Ball" by Verdi, in Italy.
Both Miss McDonough and Dunn will be accompanied by Lucy Rogers.
Mrs. (Paul) Sanford, a contralto has sung professionally on Stage, Washington, radio program Accompanied by Joyce Bestall Anaheim, she will present Sebert's "Serenade," "Liebestra" by Liszt and, in Latin, Schubert "Ave Maria."
The traditional closing selection for all of Cranston's concerts "Now That Day Is Over" by Billy Willis, will be played by Wilcox the console of the Abbey's organ.
The public is cordially invited to attend the free program.

Federation of Women’s Clubs To Meet Friday
The board meeting of the Orange County Federation of Women’s clubs will be held tomorrow (Friday) at the Methodist church, Euclid and Stanford streets in Garden Grove, federation spokesmen stated this week. Mrs. August E. Schumacher, president, will preside.
The 10 o’clock morning session will begin with the invocation by Rev. Bernard Brewster, minister of that church. A patriotic meditation will be presented by Mrs. Albert Raymond, chairman of citizenship.
Speaker for the session will be Rev. J. Maxwell Chamberlain, pastor of the First Methodist church of Fullerton. Introduced by Mrs. J. W. Frank, chairman of Bible literature, he will speak on “Importance of Early Spiritual Training.”
Cranston Pupils To Give Concert At Melrose Abbey
Five vocal students will be presented in concert by Albert M. Cranston, singing instructor and opera singer of Anaheim, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Melrose Abbey, 101 highway.
Mary Anne Morrison of Fullerton, Charles Clark of Los Angeles, Elizabeth McDonough of Los Angeles, Wayne Dunn of Los Angeles and Elnora Sanford of Anaheim will appear on the well contrasted program.
Two organ solos and intermission selections will be played by Norman Wilcox of this city, organist of the Anaheim Christian Scientist church.
A coloratura soprano, Mrs. Morrison won first place in the 1947 Musical Arts contest of Orange county. Accompanied by Janette Easton of Fullerton, she will sing “Carmena” by Wilson; the aria “Je Suis Titania,” in French, from the opera “Mignon” by Thomas, and “Serenade” by La Forge.
Tenor soloist Clark will present the “Neopolitan Love Song” by Herbert; Toselli’s “Serenade” and “N’Appari” from the opera “Martha” by Von Flotow. He will be

Miss Holsinger With County Schools Offices
Miss Edith Holsinger, principal of Katella elementary school, the past three years, and a member there for 13 years previously, was recently promoted to the staff of the Orange county schools offices as a general assistant in elementary education. She is one of four such advisors each of whom serve one fourth the county.
A graduate of the University of Southern California, Miss Holsinger holds a secondary credential, and a credential in elementary administration and supervision. Her teaching experience extended from the third grade to the eighth grade.
Well known in Orange county professional organizations, she appeared before many groups with her classes to give teaching opportunities. Miss Holsinger gained recognition for her dedication and creation of school programs and pageants and for her directing of choirs and other musical groups.
To date she has served on several curriculum committees for development of study materials.
Missionary Aide Group Meets In Fullerton Home
Members of the Missionary Society of the Grace Lutheran church of Anaheim enjoyed hospitality of Mrs. Emil Michael her Fullerton home in the Suh Hills tract recently. Mrs. Fr Paulsen, president, presided over the meeting which saw the formation of officers.
Named to serve during the suing year were Mrs. Julia Baech, president; Mrs. Frieda Hessen, vice-president; Mrs. H Geiger, secretary; and Mrs. H Rasmussen, treasurer.
The affair began with a o'clock dessert course followed by the business session.

Attend Confab
In Riverside
Four Fullerton Junior college students from this vicinity were among the more than 25 representing the jaysee at the annual southern California Associated Women's Students and Women's Athletic Association, last Saturday in Riverside. Delegates from 27 southern California colleges gathered for the event.
Present from this area were coeds Gloria Temple, Charlene Walker and Rogene Sherman, all of Anaheim; Lydia Shear of Buena Park, and Edna Lee Crook of Placentia.
On the Fullerton cabinets of the two organization are Jerry Allec of Placentia, WAA; and Alice Baker, Brea, and Lorraine Guglielmana, Buena Park, AWS.
Shower Honors
DeLyte Focht
Miss DeLyte Focht, bride-elect of Jack E. Monson, was the honoree of a pre-nuptial shower last Monday evening given by Mrs. Fred Edwards at her Winston road home. Miss Focht, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Ralph Focht, will plight her troth with Monson, a faculty member of Redondo Beach Union high school, next December 21.
Special games highlighted the evening's entertainment, with Mrs. Florence Baker taking top honors in "Know Your Groceries" and Mrs. Wilbert Bonney winning first prize in the memory game.
The hostess, Mrs. Edwards, asked each guest to write some good advice to the bride-to-be. All offerings were presented to Miss Focht in booklet form.
After the honoree opened her many lovely gifts, dainty refreshments of cake coffee nuts and ward, conductress, and Arlene Foster, associate conductress. Ed Marion is the outgoing grand patron.
Installation of officers will be December 9, it was announced. The incoming leaders will begin their duties during the last meeting that month.
Preparing the delectable dinner were Mrs. Pauline Marion and her sister, Mrs. Jennie Mickle, and Frank Wilson. Mrs. Riner was in charge of decorations.
Mesdames Hasson and Deane presented reports concerning the Grand Chapter of O.E.S. convention to which they were Anaheim delegates in Long Beach in October.
Featured in San Bernardino Light Opera Premier
Approximately 1500 enthusiastic residents of southern California applauded the premier performance of the San Bernardino Light Opera Association when they presented Victor Herbert's classic "Naughty Marietta," at 8:15 o'clock Monday night in San Bernardino high school auditorium. General director was Alonzo Price; Jay Rubanoff was the musical director for the three-day billing.
Appearing as the hero in the production was Edward M. Edwards of Anaheim who made a dashing Captain Dick Warrington. A Broadway personality, Edwards acted in two Xavier Cugat motion pictures and sang the tenor lead in the Broadway version of "Rosalinda."
Featured as Lt. Gov. Crandet was Davison Stivers, former Fullerton high school and Junior college band man. An actor, singer and musician, he is the leading basso of the Riverside Grand Opera Association.
Book Week At Public Library
As its contribution towards celebration of Nation Day, which extends from November 16 through November 19, the Anaheim Public Library feature all week a display ducts by Anaheim industry together with all books pertaining to such industries.
Of particular interest to teachers will be a talk Mabel Rice of Whittier College "Books for the World of Row." It will be given in library at 8 p.m. Wednesday November 19. Many Anaheimers have taken courses using Rice.
The final special event will gin at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 22. It will be a story children. The story teller Miss Elva Haskett, child brarian. Children may correspond as a book character.
Miss Elizabeth Calnonian emphasized that there is cordially invited to participate in all these events.

Elect Eastern Star Officers
Mrs. Camille Deane was elected worthy matron of the Anaheim chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and her husband Herbert Deane, was named worthy patron at the annual election officers, Tuesday evening in the Masonic Temple on East Center street. Mrs. Rebecca Hasson, oftgoing matron, presided during the business session which followed a 6:30 o'clock pot-luck dinner.
Other officers named include Vera Riner, associate matron; Harold Leigh, associate patron; Sallie Maude Adams, secretary; Inez Daniel, treasurer; Gladys Woodward of Anaheim who made a dashing Captain Dick Warrington. Highlighted by a panorama of colorful costumes, impressive group and choral scenes, beautiful lighting effects, vivid pageantry and dramatic scenery, "Naughty Marietta" was also staged Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, same time and place.
Miss Shirley Kohlenberger, Fullerton Junior college alumnus, known on the stage as Lorraine Sales, portrayed the creole bell, for the initial three day stand.
A full season of performances is being planned by the newly formed San Bernardino Light Opera Association, board members stated.
EDITH BROWNE SINGS
BEFORE BUSINESS GROUP
Miss Edith Browne, talented young dramatic soprano and daughter of Mrs. Alberta Brown Patton, 1011 East Broadway, was guest vocalist, entertaining the Santa Ana Business and Professional Women's club last week. A student of Albert M. Cranston of this city, she is now rehearsing with the Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera company, under the baton of Maestro Mimi Campanella. The "Barber of Seville" starring Miss Browne in one of the leading roles will be presented in Anaheim next month, he disclosed.

Book Week At Public Library
As its contribution towards the celebration of National Book Week, which extends from November 16 through November 22, the Anaheim Public Library will feature all week a display of products by Anaheim industries together with all books available pertaining to such industries.
Of particular interest to parents and teachers will be a talk by Dr. Mabel Rice of Whittier College on "Books for the World of Tomorrow." It will be given in the library at 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 19. Many Anaheim teachers have taken courses under Dr. Rice.
The final special event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 22. It will be a story hour for children. The story teller will be Miss Elva Haskett, children's librarian. Children may come dressed as a book character.
Miss Elizabeth Calnon, librarian, emphasized that the public is cordially invited to participate in all these events.

Ernestina Mendoza Death On Sunday
Ernestina G. Mendoza passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. Alex Morales, at 415 South Olive street, last Sunday, November 9. Born in Mexico 58 years ago, she had been a resident of Anaheim for 24 years.
Recitation of Holy Rosary was observed at the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock with mass at St. Boniface church this morning (Thursday) at 9 o'clock.
