Auto Club’s ‘Safetymobile’ Visits Here
A unique “schoolhouse,” the new, fact-finding “Safetymobile” of the Automobile Club of Southern California, rolled into Anaheim Wednesday for a special preview demonstration at the city parking lot, 122 W. Chartres, before an invited group of the city’s safety-minded civic and law enforcement officials.
The streamlined mobile unit, a 23-foot specially-built trailer, equipped with a battery of scientific driver-testing devices, is the first of its kind to be displayed on the Pacific coast. Currently, the vehicle is touring the 13 southern counties in advance of its entry into a large-scale driver research program which soon is to be launched.
Known technically as the Driver Testing Research Unit, the “Safetymobile” is a development of the club’s public safety department, and has been designed specifically to alert motor vehicle operators to their physical limitations in driving and to collect research data on “accident-prone” motorists. Seven special devices are installed within the mobile unit to analyze such driving factors as distance judgment, visual acuity, glare resistance and recovery, color vision, hand coordination and steadiness, peripheral vision and reaction time. The results of the tests, emphasizing each examinee’s physical limitations in driving, are to be compiled by the club to reach a better understanding of accident causes.
Recreation To Be Studied At Institute
The Committee for the Study of Recreation in California has selected Orange county for a recreation institute to be held at the Santa Ana high school from 7 to 10 p.m., October 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 30.
The Institute will bring to the county nationally known leaders and instructors and will be open to all persons interested in and working with youth or adults in public schools, private schools, Sunday schools and churches, character-building agencies and recreation centers. Parents are also urged to attend.
An achievement certificate will be awarded by the Adult Education department to everyone completing the institute training program. Teachers may receive institute credit for attendance. Students desiring college credit may receive it by consulting the registrar of the school at which they desire the credit to be granted.
Four separate work shops will follow a general session each evening and each individual may participate in the phase of training he chooses. The work shops will include “Games and Game Leadership,” “Social Recreation,” “Crafts,” and “Outdoor Activities.”
A registration fee of $1 will cover the entire course including a syllabus and certificate.
