NOTICE TO CREDITORS ESTATE OF KATRYN H. CARor Ball Brothers Company of California, "is further evidence of the postwar trend of eastern industry either to re-locate or to establish production facilities in the rich and growing markets of the west. This plant has been set up for the manufacture of the full line of Ball containers, ranging from fractional-ounce to gallon size jars in both wide-mouth and narrow-neck styles. The famous Ball Home Canning products, including the Ball Mason fruit jar and newly developed Ball Dome lid used to seal these jars will be processed at El Monte as will a complete line of commercial container ware with their metal closures." The El Monte plant, which will have an initial daily production of 150 tons of fruit jars and glass containers for home packers and food processors, will be a model operation both from the aspect of efficiency and from the standpoint of the safety, comfort and convenience of the approximately 400 to 450 men and women who will be employed in this new enterprise. Excepting only a minimum of key management personnel already experienced in Ball Brothers production methods, all other personnel will be drawn, as nearly as possible, from immediate El Monte areas. Its design, according to Edmund F. Ball, executive vice president, incorporated all the best features of operation, plant planning, and methods which the company has developed and adapted to glass container manufacturing from an experience now spanning more than 60 years.

Sixteen thousand persons are employed on Orange county farms and in packing plants, making and harvesting the county crops, according to George Wells, of the Farm Labor Office.
This is supposed to be the seasonal peak for farm employment.
As of the close of last week Wells reports on progress of various crops as being closely in with the harvest peak of 1946 specific crops, figures vary little there are now 4,000 men pick oranges and lemons as compared to 4,250 last year at this time date the valencia harvest is percent completed and it isimated that there is as much remaining on the trees as was in the peak year of 1945.
It is conservatively estimated that many more workers will need in order that all the farmers will be picked and packed by first of November, which is usual end of the season.
A second activity which has developed rapidly within the four years is that of growing harvesting of some 3,000 acres quick freeze green lima be About 40 vining machines, use 250 men, have been busily emended for the past six weeks in investing this crop. At the same time some 400 workers are being threshed of dry lima about 35,000 acres, and with tomato crop of 2,800 acres many acres of miscellaneous vine tables still remaining to be invested, and followed by the nut crop, there is still need much labor.

New Circular Is Issued On Weed Killers
Circular 137, "General Contact Weed-Killers" prepared by the University of California College of Agriculture at Davis, describes about 25 sprays, together with their advantages and drawbacks, compares them for effectiveness, tells how to mix and apply them, and lists which weeds they will kill.
Circular 137 is available free from the Orange county farm advisor's office, 1104 West 8th street, Santa Ana.
General contact weed-killers destroy all plants, both weeds and crops, the bulletin warns. They are used along highways, fence lines, in dry yards, and around farm buildings, but never on crop plants.
All three kinds of general-contact herbicides are explained in Circular 137. They are water-soluble chemicals, emulsions made by combining water and oil, and oils alone. Diesel oil, smudgepot oil, stove oil, kerosene distillate, low-grade oils, oil extracts, and fortified oils are discussed in some detail, and three emulsion formulas are given. Common water-soluble chemicals such as sodium arsenite are not recommended, the circular says. They are being replaced by new phenol compounds.

Please don't think we wish anybody such bad luck as the gentleman above is having. Most of us at S.P. have cars and we don't like flats either. But to be sure of a care-free, puncture-proof trip—next time, try the train. It's economical, too: a chair car trip to Chicago on the Golden State or Imperial is only $48.79 one way, $76.20 round trip, plus tax. (That's from Los Angeles; rates from other points may be slightly different. Consult your near-by Southern Pacific Agent.) —Advertisement
