In urging the passage of program by the next Conviction Burkett said, "Further we would be suicidal in view of world conditions. Demobilization of our armed forces without preparation in advance a permanent plan for national defense thrown a deplorable and dangerous element of doubt into our national security. Without pretense, diplomacy, our first national defense, is bankruptess, Universal Military Training is not a plan for war plan for peace. We as veterans who have to fight the next gravely criticize Congress floundering in a welter of cision and inaction on this matter and adjourning with completion of its task." An AMVET organization van will begin a tour of California to arouse veteran interest in California National Guardogram, and to help bring to the overwhelming force of opinion for adoption of Uniform Military Training, Burkett nounced. Circular Tells How Fertilizer Adds to Soils "Fertilizers, Soil Analysis, and Plant Nutrition" is the title of Circular 367 by D. R. Hoagland, professor of plant nutrition, issued by the University of California, College of Agriculture. It emphasizes that there is no quick, easy way to determine the fertilizer needs of any soil. Many factors of plant nutrition must be considered in deciding what fertilizer to apply or whether a soil is suitable for a certain crop, Hoagland writes. It is also difficult to analyze a large area on the basis of a single small sample of soil. When in doubt, he advises, ask the farm advisor about any practical problem in soil management. With his detailed knowledge of local conditions, he can often answer such questions best. Circular 367 discusses essential plant foods, how roots absorb them, their availability, the use of fertilizers and their effects, various kinds of organic matter and how they act, acid and alkaline soils, and plant analysis to diagnose soil deficiencies. It can be obtained free from the Orange county farm advisor's office, 1104 West 8th Street, Santa Ana. Asbestos is a rock that may be spun into yarn.
