DATED: this 12th day of August, 1947. RAYMOND THOMPSON Judge of the Superior Court CHARLES MARTIN Attorney-at-Law Commercial National Bank Bldg., Santa Ana, California Attorney for Petitioner CONservation activities by range county farmers under 1947 Agricultural Conservation Program have been resumed cording to Chairman Roy L. of the Orange County Agricu P.M.A. AND THE FARMER APRIL-JUNE MEAT CONSUMPTION HIGH America consumers ate more meat per capita in the months April through June this year than in any similar period since when such quarterly records first maintained. Consumption of meat in the second quarter of 1947 was at the rate of 150 pounds per person on annual basis and is believed to be the highest for any second quarter in 35 years. Consumption during this period can be compared with the following figures: eating meat consumption per person on an annual basis for the last-June quarters since 1942: - 146 pounds - 124 pounds - 110 pounds - 145 pounds - 123 pounds - 133 pounds In the low year of 1945, civilian consumption was less chiefly because of extremely large non-national purchases in that year. Meat production in 1944 was available large supplies of meat for civilian consumption. Consumers will find more meat available in the third quarter as whole this year than last, despite the abnormally large meat marketings last year in July and must during the OPA vacation. al Conservation Committee. Uncertainty in the amount of funds available for use this year necessitated suspension of the program for several weeks. This situation has been clarified and ACP activities have been resumed. Surveys are being made by county offices throughout the country to determine the amount of work done under the program during the first five months of this year, he stated. This will give some indication of the extent of funds available for practices during the remaining five months of 1947. Funds available nationally for practices under ACP will be somewhat less for 1947 than they were in 1946, he added. IS IT HAPPENING HERE? In a relatively few hours Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson saw what has happened in Europe and what is happening in this country. He had this to say about the comparison: "Europe provides a striking example of what it means in terms of living standards to have soil resources inadequate in relation to population. Europe reached this situation through population increases beyond the ability of the land to supply adequate food. "Some of our most productive lands, particularly the rich Missouri and central Mississippi River basins, have again suffered extensive and irreparable damage by flooding, sendimentation, and erosion. This continued destruction of our productive topsoil by erosion and deposits of unproductive soil on rich bottomlands by flooding may well lead to lower living standards in this country if we do not speed up every phase of conservation work." Fewer counties will have more than 20 counties. Cash equivalent price for premium payments may be established on the basis of parity or comparable prices for the insured commodities or on the basis of an average market price. Indemnities will be paid on the same basis as premiums are collected. Membership on the board is expanded to include two persons experienced in the insurance business who are not employed by the government as well as the corporation manager and two other persons employed in the Department of Agriculture. As yet the counties in which crop insurance will be written in 1948 have not been selected. Counties selected must be representative of areas where the commodity insured is normally produced. DECIDUOUS FRUIT RESEARCH COMMITTEE STRESSES MERCHANDISING Research that will increase efficiency in the merchandising of deciduous fruits and their products is the most important problem of the industry for consideration under the Research and Marketing Act of 1946, according to recommendations recently submitted by the Deciduous Fruit Advisory Committee. To accomplish this goal the committee makes these specific suggestions: (1) Increase educational work among distributors, such work to be based on thorough studies of distributing institutions now considered successful and on better knowledge of consumer buying habits and taste preferences; (2) determine means of improving quality and condition of the fruit in various stages of the marketing process so that they the low year of 1945, civilian consumption was less chiefly because of extremely large non-native purchases in that year. meat production in 1944 is available large supplies of meat for civilian consumption. Consumers will find more meat available in the third quarter as this year than last, due to the abnormally large meat marketings last year in July and must during the OPA vacation. Additionally, they will find distribution more evenly spread over entire three month period, rather than a concentration of sales in a few weeks. This latter supply is estimated at only 5 billion pounds compared to about 4½ billion pounds for the same period last year. Locations for foreign shipment during the period from July through September amount to about one-third of one percent of the meat expected to be produced this quarter. The allocation of 16.8 million pounds is equal to one-third of a day's meat consumption in the United States. ATOES PUT TO GOOD USE OF purchases of potatoes to supprise up to July 1 amounted to 208,7439 hundredweight. Of the amount, 809,510 hundredweight have been diverted to suitable institutions, to the cool lunch program, for starch manufacture, and livestock feed. PERSON SEES NEED FOR REASED CONSERVATION calling for a speed-up of conservation work, Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson says that otherwise the erosion of flood destruction of our productive topsoil may well lead to lower living standards. Flood control is a job that lies where run-off begins," the secretary said. "It includes treat-the land in whatever way will win maximum infiltration of fall into the soil consistent with the capability of the land for production of crops, pasture, forests. It includes the safe and usefulposal of run-off from fields and trees through stable waterways in the temporary detention of part of the run-off in uplandage basins where necessary practicable. Flood control measures fit in with other conservation and destroy practices designed to re-build up soil fertility, the farming operations easier, ease production and maintain lands, particularly the rich Missouri and central Mississippi River basins, have again suffered extensive and irreparable damage by flooding, sendimentation, and erosion. This continued destruction of our productive topsoil by erosion and deposits of unproductive soil on rich bottomlands by flooding may well lead to lower living standards in this country if we do not speed up every phase of conservation work." FEWER COUNTIES WILL HAVE CROP INSURANCE IN 1948 Under amendments made recently to the Federal Crop Insurance Act, the insurance program in 1948 will be limited to 200 counties for wheat, 56 for cotton, 50 each for flax and corn, and 35 for tobacco. Insurance will be against loss from all unavoidable causes. Coverage cannot exceed 75 percent of the yield, but if this generally exceeds the investment in the crop, the Federal Crop Insurance Board must reduce the coverage to more nearly reflect this crop investment in any area. The amendments also provide that two crops may be added to the insurance program in 1948 and not more than three may be added in the following years. These additional crops may be insured in not more than 20 counties. Beginning with 1948, the board can insure, or reinsure insurers of, producers of crops under plans adapted to the crop. Reinsurance for private companies is limited to contracts covering farms in not CLASSIFIED COLUMNS For A Winning Handful of RESULTS Our Classified Column advertisers often call us back to say—“best investment I ever made: results in 24 hours.” See the wide range of services offered to you—look through our Classifieds today!
